Look at the pattern on the face guys, the ruddy duck has lines while the female surf Scoter has patches. The feet color also throws out the Ruddy duck, a ruddy has grey/black feet while the Scoter has dark red/orange feet and this thing was way bigger than a ruddy duck.

100% female surf scoter

Surf scoter or ruddy?
I've killed a few ruddy ducks and they are usually a small duck....the duck in that pic looks too big to be a ruddy duck in my opinion. I would send it in for ID though to know for sure. Where was this duck killed? I'm assuming one of the deltas?

Surf Scooter
100 % positive it's a female surf scooter. We killed one in bayou black 2 years ago and a male surf scooter last year in bayou black. I guarantee you it's not a ruddy duck.

Surf Scoter
It was killed on the Pointe-aux-Chenes WMA.

Male Surf scooter
this is one we killed on our lease last year

That's awesome man, I wish we would have gotten a male. She came in by herself.

Female
We got this female the year before - Actually, we've seen a few over the years. They tend to get in with the piles of ringnecks.

Have heard of others killing some sea ducks in SW LA. A guy in our club killed a hen bufflehead the other day

Buffleheads
We killed a few buffleheads in this same hunt.

Sea Birds
Last year you could find White-winged scoters, Surf Scoters, and Black Scoters in Cameron Parish as well as an occasional oldsquaw (long-tailed duck). Also some other oddities seen such as a Razorbill which is a very cool bird

Very cool
Considering scoters also dwell on the Great Lakes, it's not too far of a stretch to think they would make it this far. Especially last year when they had the big freeze over on the lakes up there. Maybe a few have imprinted enough to come down again. In any case I think this is a really cool kill!

not a ruddy duck
100% positive that's a surf scoter, I killed one last year on opening day in lake desalmands.

Blanchard that's a hen surf scoter. JJ that's a drake white winged scoter you are holding not a surf. Hunted sea ducks in New England where they are very plentiful along with eiders and old squaw.

All about that Bill
That Bill gives it away for sure...Nice Scooter...Have had a couple come by me up on Toledo Bend late in the hunt and I was tight on my limit and I couldn't Identify them fast enough to shoot them. Had two drakes in the flock....Missed out on a rare trophy for our area no doubt. Nice
