Minn Kota On Board Charger Issue

Reply

I have a Minn Kota On Board 2 bank charger that is 6 years old. I have never had an issue with it, but it appears that it's only charging one of my batteries right now. After charging for a couple of days, one battery is fully charged and the other reads 4.4 volts when tested with a volt meter. I hooked up my portable charger to the battery that is not being charged by the on board, and it appears to be taking a charge, so that battery doesn't have a bad cell. My question is this. On the top of the charger, it says battery 1 on one side, and battery 2 on the other. There is a red and green LED light by the battery 1 label and also by the battery 2 label. When I plug it in right now, battery 1 has both the green and red LED lit, and battery 2 has just the green LED lit. Has anyone had this problem before? I am curious to see if it was a loose connection, or if the unit had crapped out if this happened to one of you. All of my connections appear to be corrosion free and tight. Thanks in advance for any help.

Maybe time to replace
May have just crapped out on you. Six years on any electronics operating in that harsh of an environment is pretty good. My Minn Kota charger is going on 5 years.

You're Probably Right
You're probably right. Thought it was worth a shot to see if someone had the same experience and it was something simple.

fuse
Minn kota cheragers have an inline fuse for each bank, make sure the one for that bank is not burnt out. Had that problem with mine. A fuse is much cheaper than a new charger

Saw one of them
I assume you are talking about the external wiring? I noticed one in line fuse and checked it, and it was fine. I didn't notice a second one but I will take a look this evening. Thanks.

I know the problem
Mine did the dame thing and I figured out what it was and now mine works again.. Up past the fuses on the line that isn't working there is a thicker area of shrink tubing. What that is if you cut it off is where they take three wires and blend them into two with a little jump wire.. That jump wire is broken I'm willing to bet.. I just got a connector and put to wires in on one side and the other wire out going to the fuse and walla!!

MK charger
If a red light is showing and your battery voltage is less than 8, the MK battery charger does not charge the battery showing red. Need to get the voltage above 8 which should give you a yellow light and then complete your charging as usual. This works for me.

Minn Kota
My onbaord charger will not charge my deep cycle batteries is the voltage is lower than 4.5 volts. This is set by the factory on the 2 bank charger.

Pro Sports Charger - Excellent
I own a 'Pro Sports' 20 amp 3 bank charger. It is mounted inside of one of my storage boxes in the back of the boat. I charge my 2 trolling motor batteries and my cranking battery at the same time. Been having it for over 4 years now and NO trouble at all. You need to be sure that if you have the charger mounted inside your boat, that you allow at least a 1/2 inch gap between the charger and the mount. If there is not 'breathing room', the charger can overheat and burn up. I had that happen to my first one. The shop that installed it mounted it against the mounting bracket with no breathing space. I lasted about 6 months. Pro Sports replaced it for $50, instead of the real cost of $160.

I agree with some of the other posters.....check all your connections, not only on the batteries, but also on the relays.

Re: Minn Kota On Board Charger Issue
Check the fuse and the cable. My son has a MK charger. Banks in them fail. I have a Guest. If it isn't the fuse and it turns out to be the MK, replace with a Guest or Pro Sports. Let us know what you find!
Good Luck!

Re: Minn Kota On Board Charger Issue
Change wires on both the batteries and see what happens. If the battery is bad the other bank of the charger will do the same thing if the charger is working properly.
A battery that reads 4.4 volts throws a big flag.
