2nd Amendment Sales Tax Holiday set for this weekend, Sept. 2-4

State’s budget crunch means eligible purchases subject to 3 percent tax

Louisiana’s Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday will go on this weekend, but this year the state’s ongoing budget crisis has reduced the savings hunters and outdoorsmen will experience on firearms, ammo and other eligible hunting supplies.

During the first session of the Louisiana Legislature earlier this year, the state sales tax exemption for 2016 and 2017 was set at just 2 percent, meaning eligible purchases are subject to 3 percent state sales tax instead of the full 5 percent.

However, eligible purchases remain fully exempt from all local sales taxes.

But some outlets are providing additional discounts to sweeten the pot.

Simmons’ Sporting Goods in Bastrop is having a “We Pay the Tax Sale,” and at Buckfins-N-Feathers in Broussard, Kelly Neuville said his store would also be covering the state tax on eligible merchandise.

“It’s the busiest weekend of the year for us, including Christmas and Father’s Day,” Neuville said.

According to the Louisiana Department of Revenue’s Web site, hunting products eligible for the sales tax exemption include ATVs, apparel, archery items, firearms, scopes, tree stands, hunting knives and more.

The Second Amendment Sales Tax Holiday was created by the Louisiana Legislature in 2009, and always occurs on the first consecutive Friday through Sunday in September.
