Traditionally opening weekend of dove season in the Bayou State is still hot and humid. So hunters need to be cognizant of the dangers to heat and exposure to the sun’s UV rays.
Here are some suggestions:
• Doves will hug tree lines. Find a shady spot in their path.
• Bring a lawn chair to get off your feet and keep off the ground. Fire ants, redbugs, ticks and other insects are still active in the late summer.
• Make sure to pack insect repellent.
• Sunscreen should be used on all exposed skin.
• Eyes are susceptible to injury from UV rays as much as skin; a good pair of polarized sunglasses can eliminate injury.
• Snakes can always be a problem in a field because they prefer shade like hunters do. So pay close attention where you set up.
• A small ice chest with a mix of ice, water and Florida water — along with a face towel — can be a welcomed comfort on hot days in the field.
