Chumsicle

Biloxi’s Capt. Mike Moore’s favorite way to catch snapper is with a chumsicle — a fish popsicle that’s fished on a downrigger.

Making chumsicles is pretty easy: Just put a brick in the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket, fill-up the bucket with crawfish and chum, and then freeze it.

When Moore gets out near a rig, he’ll drop the bucket about 150 feet on a downrigger.

After about 10 minutes, he cranks the downrigger up about 25 feet and let the bucket sit for another 10 minutes, continuing to raise the bucket and pull fish from the bottom, away from the rig and right up to the back of the boat.

The chumsicle brings the entire community of snapper up from the bottom of the ocean to the back of the boat, making them readily accessible.
