Empire’s Delta Marina back in business following Hurricane Isaac

Marina store, restaurant and lodge open; live bait already available.

Delta Marina in Empire is back in operation after Hurricane Isaac knocked out power and interrupted access to lower Plaquemines Parish, Darren Angelo confirmed yesterday (Sept. 12).

Angelo said live bait is available, and that the fishing reports from the area are fantastic. The temporary phone number for the marina (until the main phone lines are restored) is 318-801-0743.

Darren Angelo said the marina suffered some damage from Isaac’s fury, as well as losses from vandals and looters, but that all services have been restored.

“I don’t know which caused me the most grief, the storm or the looters,” Angelo said. “But we’re back up and running and fully operational, two weeks after the storm.”

He said they were able to largely bet back online quickly.

“We’ve been operating on generator power since day three, and the National Guard has been staying since then in the lodge,” Angelo said. “They’ve been a great assistance to us, helping with clean up, so I’ve got nothing but praise for the guard.”

Angelo said the storm surge didn’t get high at the marina in Empire, never even flooding his dock.

“We had more problems with the high winds and the endless rain,” he said. “We lost a part of our stair railings, and all that rain softened the ground and the consistent winds pushed a lot of utility poles over.

“I give kudos to Entergy for all they did to get power back down here so quickly. I heard rumors that we might be without power until December, but we had power on Sept. 10. I take my hat off to Entergy; I think they did a great job.”

The one thing still lacking?

“We need some workers,” Angelo said. “The store is open, the restaurant is open, we have the  lodge open, the marina is open, but I don’t have enough employees.

“Anybody looking for work down here, come see me. I’m hiring.”
