A grand slam — just before the World Series

Catching speckled trout, redfish, flounder and more

Though autumn cool fronts often bring in some ferocious winds, they also drop water temperatures and inspire everything that swims to bite like lionesses through the neck of a zebra. That makes this season the best time of year to boat a grand slam (redfish, speckled trout and flounder) or even a Cajun grand slam (redfish, speckled trout, flounder and largemouth bass).

During my most recent trip, I accomplished the former, and my boat cumulatively accomplished the latter.

My son, Joel, and I were fishing after the first significant cool front of the year, and the fish had definitely responded to the lower water temperatures. We used Matrix Shad soft-plastics and Zoom Baby Brush Hogs to put fish after fish in the boat.
