Capt. Tommy Pellegrin always has a plan in mind when he leaves the dock. But he said he’s ready to zig and zag because, well, stuff happens.

“It’s hard to pick a spot before you leave the dock,” Pellegrin said. “Different things happen: Somebody’s there, the tide’s not moving, whatever.”

So while he always has a starting point in mind, he works like a chess player, with several moves mapped out in his head even as he leaves the marina.

“When you get on the water, you start seeing what’s happening,” Pellegrin said. “This morning, we started at the beach, and nothing was going on there. We went to another spot on the beach, and somebody was there.

“So we headed to a third spot (Caillou Island), and pecked at the trout until we had a nice box.”
