A 20- to 30-foot sperm whale washed onto a Grand Isle beach today, according to one news outlet and several Facebook reports.

Karl Thayer and Carl Vidrine, who is a well-known Grand Isle angler, were among those who posted photos of the dead whale on Facebook.

Thayer told LouisianaSportsman.com the whale washed ashore near Megan's Snowball Stand and looked like sharks had been "nibbling" on it.

There were no other details available about the incident, but Grand Isle's Police Chief Laine Landry told houmatoday.com that the whale appeared to be a young adult.

Landry said biologists will collect tissue samples before the the whale is buried in a trench dug by the city, houmatoday.com reported.
