Agent airlifted after incident related to vehicle stop, agency reports
A Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agent was shot multiple times early this morning (Jan. 7) during a vehicle stop, the agency reported.
Monroe’s Senior Agent Tyler Wheeler, who had stopped a vehicle on Highway 165 between Sterlington and Bastrop at 2:06 a.m., was airlifted to the LSU Health Shreveport Trauma Center about 4 a.m., but the extent of his injuries is currently unknown, the LDWF said in a news release.
Another LDWF agent a short distance from the traffic stop arrived on scene around 2:15 a.m. and found Wheeler on the ground, the LDWF said. That agent called LDWF dispatch, secured the scene, notified local emergency medical services and rendered assistance to Wheeler, the agency said.
When EMS arrived on scene, Wheeler was stabilized in preparation for air transport to the hospital, the LDWF reported.
Authorities are looking for the shooting suspect, and the Louisiana State Police will be handling the investigation with assistance from the LDWF Enforcement Division, the news release reported.
Wheeler has been an LDWF agent for two and a half years and is married with one child, the LDWF said.
