A couple of weeks ago, you might remember the story of Hunter Black downing an impressive 14-pointer in Bossier Parish that measured 170 inches. As awesome as that buck was, Hunter’s dad Jon did him one better on Nov. 30 when he took down a 25-point that could measure at least 200 inches.

An old, wily buck roaming the Tensas Parish woods for the past several years had garnered a reputation both for his elusiveness and his eye-popping set of antlers, which earned him the nickname of Elk Buck.
The rack was of such outlandish proportions that it more resembled one of the monarchs of the Rockies, not the swamps of Tensas.
But on Nov. 27, John Parker, 45, who has hunted the big deer for several seasons, finally had the opportunity to put his crosshairs on the old buck.

His dad, Stanley Rogers, got in on the action himself on Nov. 24 with a nice 11-pointer he shot only about 200 yards from where the 13-pointer had gone down three weeks earlier.

October and November were a couple of rough months for Glenn Cormier: his mother passed away suddenly, and only a few weeks later, one of his friends died unexpectedly.
So the 59-year-old nurse anesthetist at Woman’s Hospital in Baton Rouge headed to his deer camp south of St. Francisville for some much needed rest and relaxation.
In Cormier’s 60-acre ‘honey hole’ on the lease, he had been watching a piebald deer grow up for the better part of two seasons, and had frequently seen him from his stands and on trail cam pictures.

When you get on your stand before daylight without eating any breakfast, there’s a good chance you could get hungry in an hour or so, especially if you’re a 7-year-old boy.
That’s the situation Ryon Walker, 38, found himself tending to on Saturday, Nov. 30 while hunting with his son, Caleb, on a 100-acre pine-forest plot in Claiborne Parish.

Many people say the quiet solitude of a deer stand is therapy to escape the non-stop daily grind.
For Corinne Portier of Chauvin, it’s all that and more.
Portier, 49, started hunting seriously after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2004. It returned in late 2011, and after a double mastectomy, chemo, radiation and a year off from hunting, she took down her biggest deer to date with a nice 8-point last month in Terrebonne Parish on the opening day of muzzleloader season.

As a toddler, Daisy Verdin was introduced to hunting when she accompanied her mom to their deer stand in north Claiborne Parish.
“I’d take her with me, and she had her own little chair she sat in,” her mom, Mandy, said. “She’d take her colors and coloring book and today, there is some of her ‘art’ on the walls of my stand from when she went with me.”
That early introduction to sitting in a deer stand and observing what went on out in the woods apparently had a far-reaching effect on the youngster, because on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 24, the 11-year-old sixth grader at Summerfield High School performed like a seasoned hunter when she calmly downed an impressive 11-point buck that scored 161 1/8 inches Boone and Crockett.

Hunter Black was getting pretty fed up with a big buck he knew was hanging out on his property in Bossier Parish.
Trail cam photos showed the deer around his stand during daylight hours when he didn’t hunt, but on days that he did, the buck was a no-show.
“I had seen this buck on camera all season long and had gotten pretty frustrated because he seemed to have a sixth sense. He seemed to know when I’d be hunting and when I wouldn’t,” Black said.
The hunter’s luck finally took a turn for the better on Nov. 23 when he left his bow at home, picked up his Weatherby 300 and climbed into his stand.

When her husband and 20-year-old son decided to go and pull trail cam cards earlier this month on their 1,400-acre lease in Beauregard Parish, Mary Jones figured that would be a perfect opportunity to enjoy an afternoon hunt in her husband’s tripod stand.
“I had three possible places that I could go. Two of them were stands I usually hunt,” said Jones, 46, who works with her husband as a bookkeeper for his logging business. “My reasoning was we were passing right by it. It was the closest, and when I found out he wasn’t going, I was like, ‘Hey, let me sit in it.’”

Since 2008, 68-year-old George Simolke of Dubberly has seen scores of trail cam photos of a big drop-tine buck on his Webster Parish property.
Because all photos of the buck except one were made at night, Simolke dubbed him Nighttime Roamer.
But the big buck let his taste for rice bran get the best of him in the daylight of Nov. 20, and made the mistake of stepping out for a nibble as Simolke sat in his box stand about 80 yards away. One shot from his 7 mm mag and the days of the old monarch teasing Simolke were over: he dropped in his tracks at the shot.
