Falling Red River produces in June June 21, 2011 at 12:46 pm The bass fishing on the Red River in Alexandria generally will start turning on in June, depending on the water level. The river still may be flooded this month, but under stable or falling conditions, a number of the bass will begin moving out to the remaining part of the river. In June, I prefer to run to the cuts and the riprap out on the main river and catch the bass on a crankbait or flip wood in the main river. |

Lunkers at Larto Lake in May May 02, 2011 at 8:43 pm Larto Lake, located south of Vidalia in Catahoula Parish, is an old Mississippi oxbow lake. I like to fish here because I can stay at the Honey Brake Lodge near Jonesville, one of the best duck-hunting spots in the nation. At this lake, you can combine a duck-hunting trip with a great bass or crappie-fishing trip in the winter. |

Fish Toledo Bend in April for spawning bass April 01, 2011 at 11:55 am I’ve picked Toledo Bend for April, because I’m competing in a Bassmaster Elite Series Tournament there this month, and I hope to place in the money. BASS has selected Toledo Bend for a tournament in April because this reservoir will be producing numbers of bass this month. |

Bet your bones on D’Arbonne during March March 04, 2011 at 7:11 am Lake D’Arbonne, located a little northwest of Monroe, is a productive place to catch really big bass this month, although the lake yields nice bass year-round. March is probably the best month to fish this lake because the bass are either in the pre-spawn or the spawning mode, and will be moving into the backwater creeks. |

Bet on Bayou Black for January bass December 29, 2010 at 6:48 am Bayou Black, located 15 minutes south of Houma off Highway 90, is one of the southernmost places to catch bass in the state. In January, central and northern Louisiana generally have cold weather. However, near the Bayou Black area, the weather may be just seasonally mild. |

Caney Lake has all you need for a Merry Christmas December 01, 2010 at 2:49 pm No, you won’t find the lunker largemouth you’ve dreamed about under your Christmas tree, but you just may find it at Caney Lake, which is known for its double-digit bass. |

Chicot is great park with even better bass November 01, 2010 at 10:46 am Ville Platte’s Lake Chicot sits on the border of the delta and the hill land. One side of the lake has a bluff bank, and the other side is as flat as the bottom of a cast-iron skillet. Chicot has numbers of cypress trees, so don’t try to get your boat up on plane there. |

It’s time to hit the cooling oxbows October 01, 2010 at 10:40 am In North Louisiana during October, the weather will start to cool off. The bass will get into their fall mode more quickly than they do in South Louisiana because they’ll start to feel winter approaching. |

Cataouatche bass get predictable in September September 01, 2010 at 2:41 pm One of the reasons Cataouatche is my lake of choice during September is because the bass are very dependable there during this time. |

Venice shines in August — hopefully not from oil August 02, 2010 at 11:53 am During the extremely hot weather this month, I’ll go to Venice, where the water’s always moving, which causes the bass to bite. For an enjoyable day of fishing and an easy day of catching, Venice will be the most-productive place to fish this month. |

July is Basin bass time June 28, 2010 at 1:39 pm Generally, by July, the Mississippi River will have started falling, which causes the water in the Atchafalaya River to begin falling. During the spring, the water will be high, and the bass hard to find because of the numbers of canals, natural bayous and lakes throughout the Atchafalaya Basin. |

Red is certainly not dead June 01, 2010 at 4:14 pm This month, I’ll return to the Red River at Shreveport to fish for bass. Generally in June, the river begins to go down and stabilize, and the bass start their summertime pattern. The water’s warm, the bass will be active and the spawn has ended. The bass are hungry and starting to feed up to replace the body mass they’ve lost during the spawn. |
