Locating benchmarks

Dear Capt. Paul:

I am interested in joining a geocaching club. Part of the activities are finding benchmarks shown on topographical maps, taking a photo of the benchmark and logging it and the photo in a club book. I have several topographical maps that show specific numbers next to a small X. Is that the benchmark for that area?

Pros and cons: Touch screen GPS controls

Dear Capt. Paul:

I am in the market for a newer GPS unit, but I am not sure to get one where the controls are activated via a touch screen or one that requires a rocker button. Of course, cost is a concern, but I am not sure which way to go. Is there a difference in weather protection?

Lowrance or Garmin Edge data for GPS units

Dear Capt Paul:

I have a Garmin GPS map 76 handheld, Lowrance hook 5, Lowrance elite chirp 7, and a Lowrance HDs 9 on my various boats. When I purchase your Fishing Edge files, will standard .gpx files work on all four or do I need Lowrance- and Garmin-specific files?

How to plot a position and course on a marine chart

Dear Capt. Paul:

This request is rather long, but it is the only way I can totally explain my needs. Recently, we were on a fishing trip about thirty miles offshore and we encountered a severe rain storm with lightning and thunder. This in itself was hairy enough, but to make matters worse, lightning struck a nearby oil platform and our radio and GPS units stopped working. By turning the units off and restarting they both came back on but the GPS unit had lost all of its route, tracks and waypoint memory as well as the internal maps that was on a memory card. All of my waypoints were now gone and I could not determine a course to reach our bayou’s jetties or even where they were located. The GPS was now displaying what I believed our current position expressed in a Latitude-Longitude format. I had a marine chart onboard and could see the jetties on the coastline but I did not know where we were located on the chart. I could not determine where we were on the chart in order to determine a course to reach the jetty. I knew we had to go north and finally we reached the shoreline but, we were miles away from the jetties. Can you describe how to determine a point on a standard marine chart.

The Circle Rigs

Capt. Paul,

I was wondering the coordinates for the circle rigs out of Belle pass. This is a group of rigs in a circle with numerous artificial reefs made up of old oil rigs and military APC’s. I believe it is approximately 30 miles due south of the pass?

Thanks,TB
