False River was once officially designated one of Louisiana’s quality lakes, giving testament to the potential of the old Mississippi River oxbow to produce stud bass. However, the lake was dropped from the quality-lake system in 1998 largely due to habitat degradation that made it unlikely False River would turn the corner and become a regular producer of lunkers.

As the duck season kicked off in mid-November, Louisiana waterfowlers held hope that Old Man Winter would arrive to bring down the hoards of birds we had all heard about. A strong spring hatch held promise for a banner duck season at the lower end of the flyway if we could only get that elusive “freeze-up” the old timers speak of.

Sam Fulkerson and some buddies had finished the morning hunt on Sunday (Jan. 31), and were headed to scout out some new fields for an evening goose hunt near Gueydan when they saw something strange.

“We saw some geese on the road, and we stopped and sent the dog after one of them,” said Fulkerson, known on LouisianaSportsman.com as “Uncle Bud a.k.a. Sam Fulkerson. “It just sat there.”

Plaquemine man arrested in undercover sting
January 21, 2010
Two men were busted Jan. 15 for allegedly selling deer to undercover agents in a year-long undercover operation, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported yesterday.

Henry Rineheart, 34, of Plaquemine was booked on five counts of selling deer into the Iberville Parish Jail.

Aaron Comeaux, 35, Gueydan, was issued a citation in West Baton Rouge for allegedly selling four deer to undercover agents. Comeaux also is accused of selling three alligators to the agents.

“(We) had some issues with the tide and rafting ducks, (but) all in all took some nice birds for the bag,” fedrh20 reported on Jan. 11. “Coulda smoked 100 pintail a day. Sat and watched them decoy for fun.”
