With the 2009 spring turkey season opening next month, what areas of the state might have the best hunting opportunities based upon the annual poult production surveys?

Opening day of the 2008 season, I was set-up in my ground blind on a wheat/clover patch I had planted with two sorghum strips during the spring of 2007. While the grain strips were not great due to poor growing conditions, the plants had produced some seed heads in addition to some native vegetation such as goat weed.

If you failed to tag a deer during the regular gun season or if you need a deer or two for sausage, don’t fret. There is still opportunity during the late Primitive Firearms Season.

At a recent deer-scoring event at Cabela’s in Gonzales, Joshua Babin of Prairieville brought in a buck that his grandfather killed on Thistlethwaite WMA in 1972.

The author shot this nice 3 1/2-year-old 8-point while it was working a scrape. The John Deere did double duty by making the food plots and hauling out the deer. Big Bucks on Small Tracts

Having been involved with deer management work for 30+ years, it is my opinion that hunting white-tailed deer in the South is more challenging than in any other region of the United States.

Fewer and fewer hunters are maintaining a pack of beagles all year because they know they’ll only have one month to use them. Small Game in a Big-Game World

Talk to a hunter who belongs to the Baby Boomer generation about his first hunting trip, and odds are it will be about squirrel hunting. Talk to a hunter who is a member of the next generation (Generation X) about his first hunt, and chances are it will be about a deer hunt.
