MRGO fish kill not tied to BP oil spill, LDWF says

Biologists investigating a fish kill in the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet determined the fish died because of low oxygen levels, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported.

Rockefeller Wildlife Refuge will be closed until 10 a.m. each morning from Sept. 1-7 to accommodate the annual alligator harvest, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced today (Aug. 24).

White Lake Welands Conservation Area youth duck hunt date set

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will hold youth waterfowl hunts on the White Lake Wetlands Conservation Area (WCA) near Gueydan on Nov. 6 and 7. LDWF will sponsor the hunts to provide a quality experience for young waterfowl hunters.

Fish kill reported in booms at MRGO mouth

As many as 15,000 dead fish have been found at the mouth of the Mississippi River Gulf Outlet, according to news reports.

The Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council met in Florida last week and recommended the recreational red snapper season reopen beginning at 12:01 a.m. Oct. 1, although fishing would be allowed only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Duck hunters should be given 60 days and daily limits of six ducks under Duck season tentatively set

Duck hunters will again have a 60-day season and be able to kill six birds each day if tentative season dates set today (Aug. 5) by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission is ultimately approved.

Rumors that duck season will be closed along the coast due to the BP oil spill were refuted by the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries today (July 16), although the agency reserved the right to make closures if oil is found in specific areas. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries will hold six meetings between July 26 and Aug. 3 across the coastal region to address concerns of waterfowl hunters about potental impacts of oil in coastal marshes and the upcoming hunting season.

Fishing closures on the east side of the Mississippi River were expanded dramatically this morning (July 5) by the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, which shut down all fishing in Lake Borgne, the extreme eastern portion of Lake Pontchartrain, Hopedale, the eastern portion of Delacroix, and some Pointe a la Hache waters in response to the BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

After shutting down fishing in a huge swath of the marshes east of the Mississippi River, Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries officials announced a second closure just after 5:30 p.m. today (July 5) that stopped angling north of Main Pass near Venice eastward to Pointe a la Hache.

Fishing was shut down again in some areas across the Southeast Louisiana coastline as a precaution “due to strong east to southeast winds and higher than normal tides influenced by Hurricane Alex and the proximity of oil in portions of inshore and offshore state waters, ” the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries reported today (July 1). The closures – which impact fishing in Breton and Chandeleur sounds, Barataria Bay, and the Cocodrie and Dularge marshes – went into effect about 10:15 a.m.

Terrebonne Parish canals and bayous leading from 4 Point Landing to Pointe-aux-Chenes Wildlife Management Area were closed to all boat traffic early this morning (June 29) because of concerns surrounding oil from the BP Deepwater Horizon spill, Terrebonne Parish officials announced.
