Granted, most of D’Arbonne's big bass are caught on the channel during late summer, but there are some good fish in shallow water, too. Shallow Sure Thing
September 1, 2010
Chris Burnham hadn’t fished his home lake in over two months. The owner of Old River Lure Company had been out on the road fishing bass tournaments in East Texas, and he only got to see Lake D’Arbonne out the window of his shop while he packaged his company’s Mister Hooty spinnerbaits between events.

Capt. Ron Hope frequently carries live bait with him, but plastics will start to shine as the water begins to cool. Saltwater Series: Lake Robin
August 31, 2010
September can sometimes be a difficult month to catch speckled trout. As they make their way in from the exterior lakes and bays to the interior ponds and bayous, September trout are notorious for being here today and gone tomorrow.

Creeks are an important part of bowhunting some of Louisiana’s public lands because they allow sneaky access to spots that are inaccessible by foot. Almost There!
August 31, 2010
At the conclusion of last deer season, it was obvious that I would do whatever it took to hunt the archery season this year. Deer that had been so outgoing as evidenced by cameras for all of October and the first half of November suddenly disappeared from daylight come Nov. 21.

Lime makes food plots more attractive
August 23, 2010
After three years of implementing food plots to attract deer, these “Postage Stamp Plots” featured in the August 2009 and 2010 issues of Louisiana Sportsman may finally become the tools that not only attract deer, but holds them on my property as well.

The cuts from Borgne into Lake Shore Bayou are best known for redfishing, but Falterman frequently hooks into some feisty flounder while fishing them. Saltwater Series: Lake Borgne
August 18, 2010
To say that Lake Borgne and Rodney Dangerfield have a lot in common might be a little too strong. At least everybody knew who Rodney Dangerfield was even if they didn’t respect him.

J.T. Thompson says the late summer crappie fishing at Toledo Bend isn’t nearly as action packed as early summer, but there is still plenty enough action to hit the water. Shiner survival guide for more crappie
August 11, 2010
By fishing nothing but shiners all year long, J.T. Thompson with Living The Dream Guide Service at Toledo Bend has learned what to do and what not to do with them to keep them alive and make them more attractive to crappie.

Lake Borgne can give up lots of speckled trout for anglers like Falterman’s son Jacob. Saltwater Series: Lake Borgne

To say that Lake Borgne and Rodney Dangerfield have a lot in common might be a little too strong. At least everybody knew who Rodney Dangerfield was even if they didn’t respect him.

Taking just a little time to manage the land you have, no matter how small, can pay big dividends down the road. Postage-Stamp Plots, Year II
July 30, 2010
Where does the time go? It doesn’t seem like a year has passed since I first wrote about the postage-stamp plots that Louisiana Sportsman editor Todd Masson and I began to keep back in 2008.

While most anglers have switched to live minnows for the summer, BASSMASTER Elite Series pro Dennis Tietje sticks with plastics to catch fewer, but bigger, fish. Smoking Piles of Crappie
July 30, 2010
J.T. Thompson forgot his small minnow buckets. He winced with every sunscreen-lathered hand that grabbed fresh bait from his big bucket jammed-packed with over a pound of minnows.

Captain Ron Hope says the MRGO wash outs hold trout, redfish, sheepshead and black drum. Fish stacked up around MRGO wash outs
July 28, 2010
Four boats crowded around a single piling jutting above the rocks forced Captain Ron Hope and I to keep looking for a spot. Finally, we found it, a blow-through on the long rocks where trout, reds, black drum and sheepshead were ganged up to eat bait washing through the rocks.

Deep is relative at Lake D’Arbonne
July 21, 2010
Deep is a relative term. If all the surrounding water is one or two feet deep, then a 4-foot channel winding through that shallow flat is deep. Therefore, bass anglers that think they have to fish deep during the summer don’t have to head to 20-foot channels. As is the case on Lake D’Arbonne, a 2-foot flat will do nicely as long as you fish the 4-foot hole.

Only the areas in red are closed to recreational fishing after the Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commission said tests proved there was no danger to the public. Most Louisiana recreational fishing reopens for first time since BP oil spill
July 14, 2010
For the past three months, Louisiana’s recreational anglers have had to surf Internet sites and study maps with their GPS units in hand to determine if they could legally fish their favorite areas.

Those days, for the most part, have come to an end.

The Toledo Bend crappie bite might have slowed down, but there is still plenty of action to be had on the brush piles in the lake. Toledo Bend crappie still hitting plastics
July 1, 2010
The crappie bite at Toledo Bend has slowed a little bit in the last week or two, but it hasn’t completely stopped. Several anglers are still bringing in slab-sized fish, and although many anglers have switched from jigs to minnows, the fake stuff is still working for a few folks.

While the grass mats are high-priority targets, Chris Carlos sometimes finds concentrations of bass so thick that moving off them just a few feet in either direction can drop you from a 25-pound to an 8-pound tournament limit. Hot in the Shade
June 28, 2010
Marsh bass have a rough life. Unlike their fat kin that bide their time lazily lounging under logs in lakes, marsh bass spend their days battling tidal current, searching for something to eat and evading schools of roaming redfish.
