Aluminum trolling plugs offer offshore anglers another option April 15 at 9:32 am They may look a little like cedar plugs, but the Stogie, Diamondback and Tailwiggler Lures from BooneDox Gear and Tackle are much more – because they catch fish and keep on catching them. |

Retro-fitting — Panfishing in ‘Orlandia’ is a great diversion April 01 at 7:00 am Artie blew up at the very mention of the place. “Man don’t even say the word!” he snarled. “Brings back too many memories! Now it’s all gone!” Actually, all the memories were sweet. |

Finding and fishing the Midnight Lump March 06 at 9:00 am If you are interested in line-breaking tuna and other large species in the Gulf of Mexico, then you should at least try the Midnight Lump. |

Wahoo Wonderland — How to catch more wahoo in the early spring March 01 at 7:00 am Offshore anglers know winter offers some of the best wahoo fishing of the year. Unfortunately, winter is a difficult season during which to head offshore. That’s why offshore charter captains like Tommy Pellegrin with Custom Charters out of Cocodrie can hardly wait for late February and March to roll around. |

Blue water hidden under muddy water at mouth of Mississippi March 01 at 7:00 am Capt. Tommy Pellegrin likes to think he has the luxury of fishing out of Cocodrie. Now, before you start complaining that he is being just a little shortsighted, consider that his reasoning has more to do with the Mississippi River than it does a territorial stance. |

Bump up depth finder gain to see thermocline March 01 at 7:00 am Watching your wheel wash, observing supply boats, and watching for hints of clear water boiling up around a rig are all great ways to figure out where clear water hides underneath muddy water. |

How to clean a wahoo March 01 at 7:00 am Wahoo and tuna, in spite of their large size, do not have large heavy bones. |

Wahoo thick out of Cocodrie February 16 at 9:00 am Trolling with anything that resembles bait around the Green Canyon and Ship Shoal blocks will most likely land a wahoo right now, Capt. Tommy Pellegrin said. “They’re eating everything,” Pellegrin said. “It would actually be easier to catch them if they weren’t so thick. They’re actually attacking our swivels and cutting our lines.” |

Cobia: The curious fish February 01 at 7:00 am Cobia, often called ling or lemonfish in Louisiana, are not bashful feeders. Although they can be stubborn at times, especially if a piece of hardwood or rubber is thrown at them to eat, they will usually grab almost any bait that is offered — often right next to the boat. |

Tuna fishing expected to pick up at the Midnight Lump January 25 at 12:00 pm It’s Midnight Lump season again, and Capt. Andy Cook with Captain Cook Charters said fishing there should be better in the months ahead than it has been in the past few years. Inclement weather kept Cook from marking big tuna numbers at the Lump on Saturday (Jan. 19), forcing him to move farther out. |

Venice Rodeo: Catch it all at the mouth of the Mississippi River July 01, 2012 at 7:00 am Pelayo eased back on the throttle, and we idled toward shore at (what’s left) of Grand Gosier Island. We gaped at water that looked more like Destin’s Crab Island or the Florida Keys than anything usually within reach of a Louisiana marina. Legendary Breton Sound “speck-chaser” Johnny Morise and his crew had beat us out this morning. Morise was waist deep in the emerald water, cranking his reel and twitching his topwater Badonk-a-Donk. He stopped, looked over and waved frantically. “Man!” he yelled. “This waaaw-daw sure don’t look like when we’re wade fishing outta Grand or Elmer’s island!” |

Offshore Inbox April 01, 2012 at 7:00 am My transformation to a recreational angler is complete. No longer do I subject myself to rolling waves and roaring winds all in the name of fishing. Rather than spend a day making myself miserable on the water, from my recliner I look forward to all the fish pictures in my inbox from friends whose invitations I turned down. Rain I don’t mind so much, but wind? I would rather dance with Bobby Hebert in his dress than fish in anything over 15 m.p.h. |
