If you want to participate in the 2013 alligator lottery hunts, now is the time to get in your application. The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) will select eligible hunters to hunt on four Coastal & Nongame Resources (CNR) Division Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs), 15 Wildlife Division WMAs, one U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACOE) property and 24 public lakes for this year's alligator harvest season.

Cold water, shallow water, clear water; plenty of situations make it hard to get fish to bite. For largemouth bass, one of the biggest mistakes anglers make in these conditions is fishing too fast and pulling baits through the strike zone with only a brief window of opportunity for predators to make their move.

Once again, the weather prognosticaters had proven that their job is better left to leaf readers and Ouija boards.

The Good Lord gave us a glorious sunrise, the glowing orb back-lighting a cloud in the eastern sky that looked for all the world like an angel in flight. I snapped a few photos as the sun slowly nibbled away the cloud bank. In a matter of minutes, the sun did what it has been doing for the past month, sending its searing heat down on us.

Lake Bruin will be lowered to 4 ½ feet below pool stage beginning Sept. 6, and will remain lowered through Dec. 15, the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries announced today (June 21).

The drawdown is being conducted to allow managers to replace a disabled water control structure, to help control vegetation in the Brushy Lake area, to improve fisheries and to allow homeowners to conduct shoreline and property maintenance.

In North Louisiana during October, the weather will start to cool off. The bass will get into their fall mode more quickly than they do in South Louisiana because they’ll start to feel winter approaching.

Shooting docks for crappie has definitely caught on quicker outside Louisiana than it has within the borders of the Bayou State. It's strange, really, because there are lots of Louisiana lakes that set up just like the famous crappie lakes in Mississippi, Tennessee and Alabama.

I can remember when a quarter’s worth of gasoline would putt-putt you around the lake all day long. Today, you can’t motor away from the dock on a quarter’s worth of gas.

I was reading a newspaper story recently that revealed how times have changed for the fisherman. A boater enjoying a day on the Red River in his party barge put pencil to pad and determined that his fuel tab for his round-trip fun excursion set him back $360.
