Fly Lines

World renown author, videographer and fly designer Gary Borger caught this 6.7-pound red while visiting South LA in March. The fish was caught on his Down-and-Dirty Crab, which pulsates when stripped, making it more enticing than epoxy crab flies. Enjoy a cool, refreshing drink of redfish

A beverage company in New York has just come out with “MeatWater.” It’s for those who prefer their bottled water have a taste of poached salmon, Peking duck, Tandoori chicken or even German sauerbraten.

Thomas Flemons, co-founder of south-Texas based Diablo Paddlesports, tests one of his boats equipped with a Torqeedo trolling motor on Lake Martin. This motor uses the latest in battery technology: a Lithium-Manganese unit that weighs less than 15 pounds. We’ve seen the future, and it’s electric

Once again, troubles in the Middle East have oil futures soaring, sending prices at the pump to record highs.

Ponds are a great venue for getting kids hooked on fishing. Last spring, Larry Offner of Denham Springs enjoyed a day at the LDWF Waddill Refuge ponds with his grandson, Henry. Grandpa fished his fly rod, while Henry used the ol’ commie tackle. Life is a pond, live it to the bream

In my neighborhood, “A Ditch Runs Through It.” It connects two neighborhood lakes, so it maintains a constant water level.

No trip to western Colorado is complete without a tour of the Grand Mesa, at 500 sq mi the largest mesa in the world. Despite over 300 lakes and several hundred mi of trout streams, this area remains one of the best-kept fishing secrets. Colorado ranch offers romantic adventure

Thirty years. That’s how long Lisa and I have been happily married. And almost as long since our last trip to Colorado.

Live demos and hands-on coaching, given by certified instructors, are the best way to improve casting skills. Spring is a busy time for venues that offer casting education. Check the calendar at laflyfish.com for dates and locations. Flyfishing basics with no additives

Remember that ice cream commercial where little Johnny is having trouble reading the ingredients on the carton?

Kurt Becnel, a junior at Catholic High in Baton Rouge, recently caught his first saltwater fish on fly rod, and it turned out to be a “Cajun Permit.” All were caught on either a Coma Spoon or a Chrystal Shrimp. For 2011, it’s a new toy heaven

Many of the new products featured at September’s International Fly Tackle Dealers’ Show will be available for Christmas. Trouble is, there’s so many this year, you may find yourself agonizing to the last minute what to ask Santa for.

This speck was taken on a chartreuse/white Clouser tied with 1/50-ounce lead eyes, and fished a couple feet under a vosi, which is simply a Styrofoam cigar float cut in half, with a concave face sanded into the wide end. The concave face points to the fly Nymphing for specks? You bet!

Last month we touched upon the infamous vosi, which is an acronym for “Vertically Oriented Strike Indicator.” Several emails resulted on this topic.

Jake Cormier’s redfish spent so much time backing, he got a sunburn. A backing fish is a moving fish, and a good target for novice casters. The haunt for reds in October

The Rio Grande cichlid, native to South Texas, has found a new home in New Orleans, and it’s enjoying the local cuisine. Specimens over 12 inches have been caught, and even bigger ones have been seen. Warning: Catching large Rios on lightweight fly tackle Missing someone? Blame it on the Rios

To fellow flyfishers in Southeast Louisiana, our loved ones are wondering: Where have you been?

Jacob Cormier caught this large grass carp while fishing a neighborhood pond in March. He was casting an Accardo Spook to bass along a weedline when something big slurped up the popper and zoomed off. Louisiana has its share of Kansas redfish

Last year I attended a fly fishing festival where one of the seminars was entitled “Carp on the Fly.” Just out of curiosity, I decided to check it out.

Cokie Cormier shows off a nice bass taken while fly fishing with her dad last summer. She observed minnows fleeing some unseen predator along a patch of grass, then cast a size 10 Fluff Butt — a fine minnow imitation — right to the spot. The secret to fishing that father knows best

My dad. Everything he does in the outdoors — from gardening to setting crawfish traps — he does with a passion few men have. And excels at it.

Finesse leaders are one method to getting unweighted flies deep or weighted flies a little deeper. They also have the advantage of being able to detect delicate strikes when not using a float indicator. Bream secrets they don’t want you to know
