Opening day jitters September 27, 2011 at 12:42 pm It’s GO time! Since my last blog, I have made a few more scouting trips down to the Atchaflaya Delta WMA, including one where I found my game camera broken by a black bear. |

Delta scouting continues, deer and hog sign remain consistent August 23, 2011 at 2:40 pm I got a good, early start to my third scouting trip at the Atchaflaya Delta WMA. Again the first thing I noticed was hog sign everywhere. That is becoming the norm at most of the areas I have scouted so far, but should change somewhat when the season nears and there is more hunter activities. For now, however, hogs are ruling the woods. It does make for an easier entrance to the woods for me, as I simply follow the hog trails into the thick brush. |

Welcome to the jungle! August 16, 2011 at 4:19 pm All my buddies were working today and I was off. I didn't have any other plans, so I decided to make a solo scout down at the Atchafalaya Delta WMA. I got an early start, and it was few degrees cooler than normal as I walked into the woods. First impression was all the mosquitoes that I didn't see or feel on the first trip wanted to make me pay today. |

Scouting trip No. 1: Atchafalaya Delta WMA August 16, 2011 at 2:47 pm My buddy Jimmy Kyle and I headed down to the Delta in early August for our first scouting trip in anticipation of the 2011-12 deer-hunting season. We got to our destination about 7:30 a.m., and my first observation was a pleasant one: No mosquitos! There were a few deer flies in one location, but they were not bad at all. |
| Time to scout for the 2011-12 deer season is now! July 25, 2011 at 3:23 pm Now is the time to start preparing for the upcoming deer season. “What?” you might say. “It’s only July, and its 100 degrees outside!” Well, yes, that’s right, but in a week it will be August and time to start scouting, no matter how hot it is. I would suggest that if you have been sitting around since last season, you might want to at least do some walking to get acclimated to the heat and humidity before trying any type of scouting trip. Walking from your truck across the parking lot of Walmart to the store is really not going to be enough to do it, either! |

| Ground zero flood of 2011 May 16, 2011 at 8:39 am When you see Morgan City as the first subject on all of the national news channels, you know another disaster is about to begin. Unfortunately for my town, that is usually the only time we receive national attention. But my people are fighters, and I could not be more proud of them at times like these. Everyone has joined together to fight this flood. |

Thrilling hog hunt on Atchafalaya Delta WMA March 21, 2011 at 8:28 am Well, with deer season over, I turned most of my attention toward fishing. Dad and I made a trip down to Halter’s Island and caught a few reds. But with the hog season still on in some areas, I really wanted to get back and see if I could find and harvest another hog or two. My buddy Jimmy Kyle and I headed down to the Atchafalaya Delta for a late-afternoon hunt in search of some wild pork. I had an area in mind, where the hogs usually congregate and bed down, but they are easily spooked and we would need the wind in our favor to have a chance. |

Sherburne WMA bowhunt February 16, 2011 at 11:48 am Last weekend my buddy Jimmy Kyle and I took the 100-mile drive to Sherburne Wildlife Management Area to do some scouting for the end of this bow season. We spent a day and a half scouting, and really not finding much sign until we had gone fairly deep into the woods. |
| Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda January 31, 2011 at 5:30 pm The last two weeks, the deer have started moving again – somewhat anyway – at the Atchafalaya Delta WMA. I saw 14 deer in that time period, had a couple of “almost” shots, passed on a big cow-horned spike, but nothing too serious until late last week. After a morning hunt on the Big Island in which we saw nothing, we decided to try a perimeter island where I had seen a few deer lately. The wind was blowing 10 to 15 mph, so our chances for success did not seem too good, but you have to make the best of the situation. |

| This could happen to you; be prepared January 07, 2011 at 6:25 pm A couple of weeks ago, my dad, my buddy Randy and I made an afternoon hunt down at the Atchafalaya Delta WMA. It was a very cold afternoon with the temperature dropping rapidly as the light of day faded. After an uneventful hunt, we all made our way back to the boat to begin the 50-minute ride back to the Berwick boat landing. We laughed at the fact that frost was forming on our bow cases, something you don’t normally see at that time of day. Soon, however, our laughter would stop, as an event would unfold that you should hope never happens. |

Hog action from the Delta December 28, 2010 at 9:22 am I finally got a chance to get back to one of the spots where I have found tremendous hog activity down at the Atchafalaya Delta WMA. The tide was high and the wind was blowing from the south, all conditions I need to get to this location over the high sandbars. |

Big bucks taken down at the Delta; hogs moving onto islands December 16, 2010 at 2:37 pm Well, since we last talked, a number of big bucks have been taken down at the Atchafalaya Delta Wildlife Management Area. I have seen pictures and talked with one of the game wardens, so these are not just stories. |
