High quality maps for your GPS unit May 01, 2012 at 4:16 pm Dear Capt. Paul: My Garmin GPSMAP 60csx has some downloaded maps from Garmin MapSource TOPO 1:100,000, but these maps aren’t very good for marsh fishing. My Blackberry cell phone gives me Google Earth, but it won’t stand up to rain/pounding and it doesn’t work where there is no cell phone service. Is there a way to get Google Earth maps on my map60csx? Is there any handheld that gives Google Earth quality maps? If not handheld, then can you recommend a smallish fixed mount unit with Google Earth mapping? Thanks in advance for this answer and thanks for all I have learned from your posts over the years. littlewing |

Don’t get LOOPed in March 01, 2012 at 3:30 pm Dear Capt. Paul: I would like to set waypoints surrounding the LOOP restricted area as to help avoid the big nasty gray boats. Would you have waypoints and the leased blocks in which the LOOP is located that would help mark the area in my GPS? Doghouse |

Blind datum February 01, 2012 at 7:00 am Dear Capt. Paul: We recently conducted a navigation demonstration using a Rockwell PLGR II (military grade). The navigation course consisted of 34 known civil surveyed points. Using the data that was provided and analyzing our data, we concluded that after proper conversions (the same software they used), we were 2 to 38 feet off east to west and 600 feet off to the north for most of the positions. Why the variation and can you explain the 600 feet? Sammy, Colorado Springs, CO |

What gives? November 01, 2011 at 12:08 pm Dear Capt. Paul: I have some coordinates directly from a buddy’s GPS, but they are not bringing me to the same location as his GPS? Are there multiple ways to measure/input coordinates? What are we missing here? Thanks. |
