Deer management field day set for April 30

Participants of the annual Deer Management Field Day at the Bob R. Jones-Idlewild Research Station on April 30 will learn more about various aspects of managing their deer herds.

The day begins at 8:15. Pre-registration is $30 (an optional $55 fee includes membership renewal or new membership in the Quality Deer Management Association) if paid by April 25. Registration after April 25 is $10 more.

After a brief introduction and welcome, participants will rotate through seminars.

Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Deer Study Leader Scott Durham and LDWF’s Mike Perot will give a report on the 2010-11 deer season and discuss proposed changes for the upcoming season.

Kenny Cog of Plotmaster Plot Planting Machines also will discuss equipment for establishing small food plots, while the LSU AgCenter’s Steve Harrison will talk about evaluation of oat and winter pea field trials.

Night hunting and trapping techniques for controlling coyotes will be discussed by USDA Wildlife Services’ Walter Cotton, and the former state deer study leader Dave Moreland will be joined by the LSU AgCenter’s Brian Chandler and Don Reed to talk about identification of quality deer browse plants.
