The Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge will be holding its annual Hunting and Fishing Day event on September 19, 2009. The event will be held on the Refuge's Visitor Center grounds from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m.

One of the yearly attractions to Hunting and Fishing Day at the refuge is the registration and drawing for the Special Lottery Youth Deer Hunts. These hunts are special in that they are separate from the refuge wide youth hunts, which are open to the general public youth. The dates of this season’s Special lottery Youth Deer Hunts are December 22, 2009 and December 29, 2009, and will be held on designated parcels of Tensas NWR. To register for the drawing, interested youth between the ages of 8 and 15 years old (as of the day of the hunt), must sign up between the hours of 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. on September 19, during the event. All youth applicants must be present for the drawing to be selected for the Special Youth Deer Hunts that will immediately follow registration.

The Hunting and Fishing Day Event helps to support the Tensas River Refuge Association. The T.R.R.A is a not-for-profit organization that exists to assist the refuge in carrying out its purposes. The association endeavors to promote a well informed public and a healthy environment through outreach, education, and interpretation of the resources of the refuge.

Admission to the event and all activities are free. For more information on the Hunting and Fishing Day celebration at the Tensas River National Wildlife Refuge or the National Wildlife Refuge System, contact the refuge at 318-574-2664.
