Anglers finding trout playground in Buras

Everybody knows how good the fishing can be at Buras, but it’s hard to imagine just how good it is right now unless you try it yourself. The trout fishing is absolutely insane, and Capt. Ryan Lambert of Cajun Fishing Adventures (985-785-9833) said that it’s as crazy as he has ever seen.

“Man, there are 16- to 20-count shrimp jumping everywhere,” he said. “There are birds everywhere too. You can fish them if you want to, but there are so many shrimp the birds can’t possibly cover them all.”

Lambert identified the points and reefs as being the big fish hotspots. Narrowing a location down to a specific spot proved a little more challenging.

“It doesn’t matter where you go,” he said. “You can catch big trout to the east, to the west, to the Gulf, and the beaches are hot too. The fishing is so good that I haven’t gotten out of sight of my lodge roof very much since the storm.”

Baits don’t seem to matter much to the gluttonous trout. Lambert has been whacking them on a mix of H&H Cocahoes, the Dudley Shrimp, Exude Slugs and topwaters.

“We’ve been doing well on either a purple/chartreuse or black/chartreuse H&H,” he reported. “The midnight with chartreuse tail Dudley has been hot, and the new Exude Crystal Slug in green or salt & pepper has been awesome. In fact, if we get on a pile of big fish, I stick with the Crystal Slug or a topwater like a Zara Spook in chrome/black.”

Lambert added that the Crystal Slug and the Spook are working best on the points and over the reefs where the big fish are concentrated. He’s relying more on the Dudley Shrimp and the H&H under the birds.

Anglers interested in trying the wild Buras action will be glad to know that Lambert recently got his big lodge back up and running, and the other one will be open again next week. At that point, Lambert will have the entire Cajun Fishing Adventures operation open.

“We can accommodate as few as two or as many as 31,” he said. “We provide the food, the lodging, and the fishing. Just make sure to bring an ice chest because you're going to need it.”

And as good has the fishing is at Buras right now, you might want to bring a big one.
