Opening Weekend
With the opening weekend of the infamous Federal snapper season over I figured it was time for a fishing report. Seas have been less than favorable which seems like a repeat of last year in early June as well as the snapper playing jokes on us and making us wait 10 minutes to get a bite instead of 10 seconds. We were scheduled for an overnighter tonight but decided to cancel due to the wind. Hopefully after this low pressure moves out of the gulf things will come together. There is no question the fish are out there and the bait is starting to show up. With all that being said we still managed 2 days of decent catches over the weekend. Life will just be a little easier when the summertime patern finally decides to kick in and we can make the long runs in comfort to get to some numbers of decent yellowfin. However, the Ameracat has been taking the seas great and we are loving the speed with the new Yamaha 350hp V8’s. It sure does make difference when you are cruising at 40mph instead of 30mph getting to the fish faster with the same fuel economy. We have some days open for Snapper as well as the rest of the summer which is my favorite time to fish! Check us out at www.muleteamcharters.com and like our facebook page to keep up with the fishing!!!

Well it has been a while since my last report but that is due to the excellent fishing we have been experiencing! It seems as of lately everything including the thunderstorms have come together down in Venice. At least when you can avoid the storms it has been glass calm which is more than I can say about June. Thank god for xm weather!! The rip is formed up nice with plenty of bait and Mahi on it and there is tuna everywhere even close. The trick is getting to them early or grinding it out getting dirty with chum. Tuesday we had a visitor crash a free swimming hardtail right under the spar we were fishing. It was one of the biggest marlin I have seen in a while on or off a hook and I don’t think the 30wlrs would have won that battle. The bottom fishing has been off the chain and I even took the time to make a fun trip last Friday to fill my freezer and boy was that a good choice! I think I’ll let the pictures tell the rest of the story so if you have been waiting now is the time to get to Venice for your trip of a lifetime! We have been on the water 8 out of the last 10 days with all good results! The weather has not been acting like summer time but the tuna and snapper have been up their normal activities. As long as we could make the run and have had a little time to fish decent numbers of yellowfin have not been a problem. Our Yellowfin numbers have ranged from 1 fish to leaving them biting at number 10 and have all been weather dependent not due to the bite itself. Pogeys have been the bait of choice and the tuna seem to really like them if you have a good enough livewell to keep them kicking in the bluewater for a reasonable amount of time. Although the fish have been averaging around 40 pounds there have been a few bigger ones including a 92 pounder that we boated on Monday. Due to all of the long tuna runs we have been making there hasn’t been a whole lot of extra time to go out of the way to target the bigger snapper and its been killing me but most of our fish have been in the 8 to 12 pound range. Even at 2 per person if you have 6 limits that’s enough Red snapper to go around especially on top of a mess of tuna. The Mangroves have really been biting also if you have the finesse and extra time to devote to fishing them as well as the Cobia. By the way I never knew you could catch Amberjack in 3000 feet of water while chunking for tuna. I guess it is true that you learn something new everyday. We still have open dates for snapper season so like us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mule-Team-Charters-LLC/127085911209 to keep up with the fishing or check us out at www.muleteamcharters.com to get info on booking your next trip!

Well the fishing in Venice is strong as well as the amount of activity at the dock. Capt. Jim and I fished Saturday putting some tuna, Ajs, and grouper in the box with a couple of guys from central Flordia! We will be back at it this week hopefully with similar results. I just wanted to take a second to share some pictures of Saturday’s trip and of the new Mule Team headquarters which we have been working hard on since February! We still have some dates open for snapper season so check us out at www.muleteamcharters.com!

Happy Dad!!
Well I finally got my three year old daughter out on the water to see how she would react!! All in all I couldn't be happier how things turned out today! We got a late start and went to pick up the Reno skiff by the lodge around 4pm. I was nervous about how my daughter was going to handle the boat ride but after we crossed the river into Black bay I stopped and she turned around and told me 'daddy I'm not scared' to my surprise. Probably cuz Grandma was there...lol! Shortly after we rounded California point I could see birds diving in the distance. After hitting several flocks of diving seagulls mom and I decided that our little girl had passed the test and we had enough fish to fry for dinner. Shortly thereafter it was off to the camp to raid Grampa's garden!! Give us a call if we can help you with your next fishing trip. Our 33' Ameracat is one of the smoothest riding offshore boats in the Venice charter fleet and our lodge can handle whatever your crew has to offer!!!

Well it seems like the word is out that the lump is back and the proof has been lying on the docks of Venice marina everyday! The truth is no matter which side of the river and whether you decide to target wahoo or tuna the fishing right now is about as good as I have seen it in years. If you are waiting for things to get right don't wait too long because you might miss out. Even the Makos have been out in full force. I fished Friday with a good group of guys from Iowa and all they wanted was sharks. Well after all the sharks they could handle including a 10ft Tiger shark we drifted a little deeper off the back of the hill and it was tuna time!! Lets just say these boys forgot about the sharks pretty quickly. We even had a little bonus...a tagged yellowfin! Tuesday I did the Mardi Gras thing but Capt. Jim was itching to pick up where we left off on Friday and he did not disappoint! It was a fun trip and with some good yellowfin, jacks and nice wahoo who wouldn't have fun!!! We now have lodging available and some weekend dates left in March so if you have not had a chance to check us out on facebook come like us to keep up with what's been going on down in Venice at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mule-Team-Charters-LLC/127085911209 or at www.muleteamcharters.com!!

Here are couple of nice Wahoo from Friday with a great group of guys from Texas!! It was a pretty day to be on the water up until about 3:30 p.m. when all hell broke loose! We knew the weather was coming thanks to Capt. Lee and were lucky enough to make it to the pass before things kicked up to a sustained 40+ knots even making the river a bit rough. However, even a nasty ride up the river didn't put a damper on the crews spirits and off to Bourbon Street they went with plenty of fresh Wahoo and Amberjack steaks!! I think after Friday I will make sure my XM weather subscription is up to date. By the way we now have lodging available...Stay safe and be sure to check us out at www.muleteamcharters.com or follow us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mule-Team-Charters-LLC/127085911209

Been hitting Delacroix trying put something on ice due to lack of interest on the offshore front with limited success!! We kill em one day just to be disappointed the next. No worries cause the offshore fishing has picked up as expected with no shortage of wahoo hitting the dock! If your going to to try and put a few trout on ice you just gotta give it a shot. I have to say I can't remember fishing trout this late in the year ever but I have definitely had a few trips that have made it worth while! Everyday has been different due to the season with all of the fronts and river water pouring into the area. You just have to pick your times and give it your best shot. Like everyone always says you don't know if you don't go lucky for me my flatboat doesn't burn a whole lot of fuel! However, we haven't ran a bunch of offshore trips but the Ameracat is primed and ready to go so if you and your crew wanna shot at some tuna or wahoo give us a call...we also will have lodging soon so we will be able to accommodate your every need!!

We managed to fish Wednesday thru Friday last week with good results! Mike Neafus and crew from Indiana were along for the ride on the first two days and wanted to bring back a little of everything and they did. Wednesday we decided to start with the yellowfin which turned out to be a good call. Live bait was hard to come by but we did manage about a half dozen. Shortly after bait number one hit the water we had our first yellowfin on the deck of the Ameracat before the cudas decided they wanted to eat the rest of the ones we had in the livewell. Capt. Jim and I got to chumming and before long we had five more nice yellows added to the ice! Day 2 the guys decided they had more than enough tuna to bring home so we switched gears and stayed shallow for grouper and amberjack. Jason and Mike had the catch of the day with two 15 pound scamp grouper. With 6 nice scamp and a limit of amberjacks we decided to try our luck fishing a few shrimp boats and found the blackfin boiling. The crew got the grouper rods out again and we cut the leads off and quickly went to work boxing 10 or so nice blackfin. I guess too much tuna is a good problem to have!! Add in 100 pounds of shrimp the guys picked up at the dock and I think it is safe to say they are going to be popular back home for a while!! Friday Nick Schultz and crew were on board to go after the tuna again. The forecast called for 3-4 footers which quickly turned into 4-5+. All in all it turned out to be a tough morning. We tried amberjack for a while with only 1 for our efforts. However, it was on the first drop at the honey hole before a crewboat ran us off. Lucky for us the shrimpers would save the day! The crew managed 7 blackfins before we ran out of daylight and left them tearing up the top of the water!! We will be back at it this weekend as long as the weather will let us. Till then like us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Mule-Team-Charters-LLC/127085911209 to see the pictures and stay in touch or we will see you in Venice!!!

While it has been a hot one for the last couple of weeks the gulf has been flat calm just about everyday. The tuna have shown up everywhere but the trick like usual is being in the right spot when they come up from the depths and most of all having the right bait. Nothing new here except for the tons of baby yellowfin and the numbers of marlin roaming around! Friday Lil’ Joe from Pensacola got his 12th birthday wish with his first yellowfin tuna along with some amberjack. Saturday we had one of our regulars Mr. Don Allen and crew along to do some rig fishing. After putting some nice mangroves in the boat we got on an epic scamp bite boxing 18 and leaving them biting for some ajs and a little deep dropping. After the crew realized how much fish we had when their limit of ajs was on ice they wanted to see if we could try our luck at a tuna before the trip was over! Capt. Jim and I look at each other and we were off to the tuna grounds. First bait in the water got smoked only to get gut hooked and wear through the leader half way to the boat. No problem I thought to myself so we put another out and the line goes off again. Justin gets on the rod and the fish stays on the surface. I told him he had a bonita and to just finish reeling him in and flip him in the boat but boy was I wrong! As Capt. Jim was taking a leak off the back of the boat the bonita that I thought we had quickly turned into a 300+ pound blue marlin which jumped 20 or so yards behind Capt. Jim…lets just say I don’t think he got to finish what he started. The battle was short lived but the crew had seen enough and knew they had a day on the water to be thankful about so we headed to the house. Sunday we had Brian Rome and crew so it was back to the same spot we had left them biting the day before. Bait was easy to come by for us and we arrived at the hot spot before the rest of the fleet. After some good marks way out from the rig the lines started screaming! We ended the tuna fishing going 3 for 5 with some really solid 80 to 90 pounders not counting a bunch of juvenile yellows that we released…follow that up with a 6 man limit of decent ajs and I would say it was a great day at the office!! We have this weekend open if anyone would like to come along for the ride....Like us on facebook to see all of our recent pictures or to just stay in touch at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mule-Team-Charters-LLC/127085911209

Well the last couple of weeks we have kept busy eluding thunderstorms and chasing the yellowfin around the gulf. Results have been good to say the least with tuna coming to the cleaning table every trip out along with a mess of grouper…who doesn’t love that! Last Monday was a little slow with Ray Germany and his son and daughter ending up with 2 nice yellers coming home with us. Luckily it was a 2 day booking and we whipped up on 5 yellowfin the next day and hurried in to beat the rain. Friday we cancelled due to the weather. Saturday we had the guys from Brand on the boat. These guys were a pleasure and so was the fishing! We ended the day with 7 nice yellowfin and a blackfin and even though the guys weren’t fishing the Faux Pas it was nice to steal the show at the weigh-in with a board full of tuna. Sunday the tuna bite was slower for us. We put 1 in the boat on the chum then decided to switch gears and go grouper fishing which turned out to be a good call. In just a couple of hours we added 10 nice grouper to the box along with some beeliners and almaco jacks. All in all it has been an excellent stretch of fishing so Jim and I are looking to keep it going this Saturday…See all the pictures and stay in touch by liking us on facebook at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Mule-Team-Charters-LLC/127085911209

Venice Offshore 7/15-7/17
All I can say is you can’t ask for much better fishing down here in Venice, LA….Jim and I just finished up 3 days of trips and it was incredible to say the least! The weather was a bit sporty on Friday so we decided to stay close and try to make the best of things for Greg Adams and crew. They fish with us every year for the Alabama Deep Sea rodeo and like to concentrate on trophy rig fish species. After our 29.5lb red snapper win at the Mississippi Deep Sea rodeo the crew had high hopes. Ended up with a variety including: snowy grouper, barrel fish, vermillion snapper, red snapper, yellowtail snapper, almaco jacks, triggerfish, and bearded brotulas which would have broke the Alabama state record if weighed by the way. Saturday was day 2 with the same crew and was another rig haul which would turn out to be a good one for the rodeo. Final count was 12 red snapper, 27 vermillion snapper and 3 scamp. The barrel fish took most unusual fish at the rodeo and their vermillion snapper were the biggest around and swept all three places for their category. Sunday we switched gears a bit. Ludovico and his son Phil wanted tuna and tuna is what they got! With only a 2 man crew we headed out and got on a super hot tuna bite. Why does this always happen when you don’t have a full crew? By 11:30 we had their limit with 6 nice yellowfin from 50 to 70 pounds. We stopped on the way in to complete our red snapper season. It took a total of 5 drops only because the first fish came unhooked on the way up…Just plain stupid! Our facebook page is going strong with 113 active users every week. Tuna Time Again!
After taking a break for a while with all of the dirty water pushing out of Mississippi river the tuna are back in full force! Capt. Jim and I were back on the boat on Monday with a group of guys from Pennsylvania. These guys said they had been down here before but this time they chose to stay in the French Quarter…needless to say this made for a late departure. We left Venice Marina at 8am with hopes of still putting some tuna on ice. When we arrived at our destination there was tuna busting for blocks which reminded me of how the tuna fishing was out of Venice 15 or so years ago! First cast with a popper…fish on which kept up for the next couple of hours till the crew was ready to head to dock. It was hard leave at 2:30pm with the fish still biting but the 4 man crew was happy and hurting with 6 nice Yellowfin in the fishbox. The crew at Venice Marina vacuum sealed their fish for the journey back home and it was back to the Quarter for more fun in the Big Easy!
