Been hunting the same lease for right at 20 years in the Holly Beach area of Cameron Parish. It has been easily the worst year I have ever experienced. Been a very strange year with weather and obviously high water also. Hope others have done better than we have. This is the first year I can honestly say when it closes on the 17th I won't be bummed out. Hoping for better luck to finish the season and Will be back at em for teal season cause that's what we do !!

Anyone hear about the November waterfowl survey and when it might be conducted?

November 03, 2015 at 4:48pm

anyone seeing birds in the Holly Beach area yet? went down to my place Sunday afternoon and the coots are down !!

October 20, 2015 at 10:09am

Was hoping for some feedback from those with experience using hay bails to create small islands in open water for ducks blinds spots. Does this cultivate growth of roso or other natural cover? My marsh is basically an impoundment with no tidal flow and very low salinity. Any feedback would be appreciate fellows.

September 17, 2015 at 7:45am

Mr Reynolds, has there been a teal estimate done recently for the state?

September 08, 2015 at 10:17am

I would suspect that the zone dates will be coming out soon. Anyone hear any unofficial dates for the coastal zone for 2015/2016?

July 15, 2015 at 10:17am

Hoping for some help fellows. does anyone know of a great custom aluminum boat maker? looking for a 16'x 42' bottom to run a 25hp Gator tail. any feedback would be helpful.

November 21, 2014 at 9:30am

Loaded up for the opener, easy limits of teal and greys both Saturday and Sunday. Looks strong for the 1st split in the Holly Beach area.

November 17, 2014 at 3:42pm

I want to give some praise to Mr. Larry Reynolds and others who through feedback from hunters pushed back the coastal zone big duck opener to 11/15/14. I have read recent DU reports from Minnesota in particular that seem to now justify this move to push back our opener a week. The northern tier states indicate a noticeable delayed migration so far in their hunting seasons. Everything seems a month late this year because of last year's hard winter. Hopefully we will have the weather in late October/early November to push some birds down here as we seem to have great habitat here in SW Louisiana for ducks to winter. Anyone out there have a different spin on this? happy hunting !!

October 15, 2014 at 9:58am

Have had many memorable duck hunts over the years but none better than this past sunday with my 7 year old daughter. Killed my 6 teal quick and she is hooked on being in a duck blind with dad. Take em young and they will never forget the experience.

September 24, 2013 at 9:48am

anyone seeing any teal in the Holly Beach area? Went to the lease this past Saturday and only saw a few. Maybe Sabine is holding some birds. Any feedback from those who hunt in that area?

September 11, 2013 at 11:12am

Anyone have opinions on the fishing conditions in Lacassine other than good water levels? Hoping it will be better than the last couple of years.

thanks

Does anyone have any experience with putting hay bales in a brackish marsh to basically build up and grow a natural island?

Friends of mine have told me it works well.

any feedback from you guys would be great

Had decent shooting the first 2 days at our place in Holly Beach. 12 hunters killed 47 Saturday, 12 hunters killed 51 Sunday. Mostly greys, teal and a few widgeon, pintail. See what happens this week and weekend. Be safe

November 12, 2012 at 7:56am

Big numbers of grey ducks seen at my last visit to the lease in the Holly Beach area. Not many teal seen but expect to see more teal in the coming days leading up to the opener. Marsh is full of widgeon grass, should be a good year in the area.

October 30, 2012 at 8:32am

Had a good opener to the 2nd split. Greys, teals, etc. We are on pace for our best season in over 10 years in the Holly Beach area of Cameron Parish. Although not as many teal as years past, we have plenty of big ducks.

any reports from that area from others ?

December 20, 2011 at 8:27am

Overall a good first split for us in the Holly Beach area. Limits to near limits basically every hunt. Lots of greys, but not as many teal as usual for us. Hoping for some cold weather during the split!!

Hope everyone had a safe split.

December 02, 2011 at 1:43pm

Had good shooting on the first 2 days. lots of greys, teal and a few widgeon. need some more cold weather to bring some new birds down in the area. But all in all, it was good.

anybody else hunt the Holly beach area and have a report?

November 14, 2011 at 7:43am

Only 3 days left till the opener and we have been blessed with good habitat and lots of birds. As in years past my hunting buddies and me are always talking about hunting safety. I hope everyone has a safe waterfowl season and stay safe.

the recent floods will no doubt have an effect on the upcoming teal season in southern LA. Prayers going out to those who have been affected by these devastating floods.

thanks for the info, wanting to construct a platform blind with boat hide parallel behind the blind. but want the island to look round in shape so the setup does not look boxy.

September 17, 2015 at 12:08pm

looks to me like none of these pics are from any September !!

hoping this timely cool front coming will help those in the coastal marshes of SW LA. your thoughts?

A comment titled: Re: Coastal season dates way too early! in response to a report titled: Coastal season dates way too early!

I am fortunate i guess because every year prior to Halloween we are loaded up with greys, teal and a few pintail unless we get storm surge from a tropical system. One week earlier just gets me in the marsh sooner after a long off season and I learned years ago to not worry about things i have no control over !

A comment titled: Re: LWF Commissioner says what? in response to a report titled: LWF Commissioner says what?

I guess I am in the minority here that thinking that ' the inmates running the prison is a bad idea. ' IE, hunters being the determinant factor in setting the seasons instead of scientific data and the commission, who's job is to do so. This survey has opened up Pandora's box with some hunters here. I do agree that Mr. Reynolds has always done a great job and his love of the resource cannot be questioned here. His hands were obviously somewhat tied with this issue for the later start date in the coastal zone. But the commission apparently has the power to terminate seasons if they choose to in the interest of wildlife management. That would be disastrous so again I will say and for the last time, I feel fortunate that we have a process, even if not perfect. Next year is a clean slate, one would hope.

pathfinder, thank you for the facts on the situation. I think most here appreciate the background as to the process.

cblood9, I understand where you are coming from believe me and I appreciate your response here. What I am saying is that they apparently did not consider public opinion like most had hoped. At this point the only thing can happen is that someone who cares nothing about the waterfowling lifestyle decides that lawyers/courts are appropriate moving forward. Believe me lawyers and judges can only complicate this issue for those of us who cherish waterfowl hunting. Lets hope that next year the survey data is considered more heavily in the decision making process. Those who make the decisions will likely be the same individuals that some hunters are upset with presently though.

A comment titled: Re: LWF Commissioner says what? in response to a report titled: LWF Commissioner says what?

I still cannot believe there are those who are still up in arms about the coastal opening 1 week earlier? The commission did not use the survey feedback, so what !! To my knowledge they were not obligated to use any data from the survey to base their decisions although you would hope they at least considered the data info. It would be wise to stop breeding contempt for the commission. Some lawyer might decide to take this thing to the mat in front of a liberal judge and then the judge decides to suspend the entire season while he hears discovery on the matter. My advice is to play the hand you are dealt and hunt

A comment titled: Re: Coastal Duck Season Dates in response to a report titled: Coastal Duck Season Dates

Essentially what could happen is a somewhat liberal judge in New Orleans while presiding over the issue could very well suspend the season altogether so as to seem ' fair and impartial ' until the issue gets resolved through a slow litigation process . That would be a disastrous scenario for all those cherish the waterfowling lifestyle. I am not a lawyer but I did sleep at a Holiday Inn Express last night.

duckhunter7777, you sound like a very sensible and reasonable hunter. I appreciate that and hope that maybe these discussions about what we can't control will change some views with regards to this discussion Is the season too early or too late, etc. At the end of the day, none of it matters. Good luck to you this season and hope it is a safe one too !

A comment titled: Re: Coastal Zones dates in response to a report titled: Coastal Zones dates

The smart thing for coastal zone hunters to do is not worry about what they can't control like the weather( early fall, hurricanes etc ) Maybe the I-10 rice belt should have its seasons determined by status of the 2nd crop! See how stupid that sounds. All hunters, regardless of zones, whether you like the dates or not, when the sun rises on your opening day, it might be a good idea to simply enjoy the fact that there is a duck season. One day the liberals running this country might find a way to take away hunting all together. The Constitution is at risk as long as these liberal stove pipers continue to take shots at our right to own guns.

Personally as a coastal zone hunter and our lease past history, I could not be happier. More November days means bigger harvest numbers for me and my guys for a 60 day season. I am sure I will hear the flip side from others in here though. Come on boys, lets hear it !

A comment titled: Re: Coastal Zones dates in response to a report titled: Coastal Zones dates

Would be a bad idea to have the inmates running the jail so to speak ( hunters having too much say ). We all should just play the hand we are dealt with regards to the seasons, limits , etc. set down by the powers that be. Personally i only worry about what i can control with regards to my lease and maximize hunting success that comes with years on the same property. But most of all, I try to enjoy our right to hunt and the opportunity just to be in the outdoors any chance I get. Hope everyone has a safe season

A comment titled: Re: Coastal Zones dates in response to a report titled: Coastal Zones dates

As a coastal marsh hunter, i want the season open in November as long as possible because of the early migrant species like bw teal, greys and pintails. Different guys here hunt different areas with different habitat affecting hunting and have different wants and opinions. The one factor we should all agree is that survey participation was very low which leaves the decision makers little to go on. But Mr. Reynolds always finds the time to participate in these discussions on this site which is good for all involved.
