Been the strangest year I can ever remember. We are consistently killing ducks but lots of divers ( scaup & ring-neck ), a few greys and a few teal. We normally don't even see divers till late December or early January but they have been thick since the season opened. Anyone else in this part of the state struggling to see good numbers of puddle ducks like greys, teal , etc ? Not complaining, just observing an abnormal pattern for our area.

Happy hunting

To Mr. Larry Reynolds:

Sir, can you provide any info as to what you are hearing with regards to any concentrations of teal in SW LA?

any info you can provide would be great

thanks

Been hunting the same lease for right at 20 years in the Holly Beach area of Cameron Parish. It has been easily the worst year I have ever experienced. Been a very strange year with weather and obviously high water also. Hope others have done better than we have. This is the first year I can honestly say when it closes on the 17th I won't be bummed out. Hoping for better luck to finish the season and Will be back at em for teal season cause that's what we do !!

January 06, 2016 at 1:44pm

Anyone hear about the November waterfowl survey and when it might be conducted?

November 03, 2015 at 4:48pm

anyone seeing birds in the Holly Beach area yet? went down to my place Sunday afternoon and the coots are down !!

October 20, 2015 at 10:09am

Was hoping for some feedback from those with experience using hay bails to create small islands in open water for ducks blinds spots. Does this cultivate growth of roso or other natural cover? My marsh is basically an impoundment with no tidal flow and very low salinity. Any feedback would be appreciate fellows.

September 17, 2015 at 7:45am

Mr Reynolds, has there been a teal estimate done recently for the state?

September 08, 2015 at 10:17am

I would suspect that the zone dates will be coming out soon. Anyone hear any unofficial dates for the coastal zone for 2015/2016?

July 15, 2015 at 10:17am

Hoping for some help fellows. does anyone know of a great custom aluminum boat maker? looking for a 16'x 42' bottom to run a 25hp Gator tail. any feedback would be helpful.

November 21, 2014 at 9:30am

Loaded up for the opener, easy limits of teal and greys both Saturday and Sunday. Looks strong for the 1st split in the Holly Beach area.

November 17, 2014 at 3:42pm

I want to give some praise to Mr. Larry Reynolds and others who through feedback from hunters pushed back the coastal zone big duck opener to 11/15/14. I have read recent DU reports from Minnesota in particular that seem to now justify this move to push back our opener a week. The northern tier states indicate a noticeable delayed migration so far in their hunting seasons. Everything seems a month late this year because of last year's hard winter. Hopefully we will have the weather in late October/early November to push some birds down here as we seem to have great habitat here in SW Louisiana for ducks to winter. Anyone out there have a different spin on this? happy hunting !!

October 15, 2014 at 9:58am

Have had many memorable duck hunts over the years but none better than this past sunday with my 7 year old daughter. Killed my 6 teal quick and she is hooked on being in a duck blind with dad. Take em young and they will never forget the experience.

September 24, 2013 at 9:48am

anyone seeing any teal in the Holly Beach area? Went to the lease this past Saturday and only saw a few. Maybe Sabine is holding some birds. Any feedback from those who hunt in that area?

September 11, 2013 at 11:12am

Anyone have opinions on the fishing conditions in Lacassine other than good water levels? Hoping it will be better than the last couple of years.

thanks

Does anyone have any experience with putting hay bales in a brackish marsh to basically build up and grow a natural island?

Friends of mine have told me it works well.

any feedback from you guys would be great

December 20, 2012 at 4:34pm

Had decent shooting the first 2 days at our place in Holly Beach. 12 hunters killed 47 Saturday, 12 hunters killed 51 Sunday. Mostly greys, teal and a few widgeon, pintail. See what happens this week and weekend. Be safe

November 12, 2012 at 7:56am

Big numbers of grey ducks seen at my last visit to the lease in the Holly Beach area. Not many teal seen but expect to see more teal in the coming days leading up to the opener. Marsh is full of widgeon grass, should be a good year in the area.

October 30, 2012 at 8:32am

Had a good opener to the 2nd split. Greys, teals, etc. We are on pace for our best season in over 10 years in the Holly Beach area of Cameron Parish. Although not as many teal as years past, we have plenty of big ducks.

any reports from that area from others ?

December 20, 2011 at 8:27am

Overall a good first split for us in the Holly Beach area. Limits to near limits basically every hunt. Lots of greys, but not as many teal as usual for us. Hoping for some cold weather during the split!!

Hope everyone had a safe split.

December 02, 2011 at 1:43pm

Had good shooting on the first 2 days. lots of greys, teal and a few widgeon. need some more cold weather to bring some new birds down in the area. But all in all, it was good.

anybody else hunt the Holly beach area and have a report?

JB, you seem like a good American. Bottom line : Interpretation of right or wrong is a matter of opinion and you are entitled to yours. The bill ,right or wrong is what matters at present and it did not pass. People on here can piss and moan all they want and it won't change a thing. We are a country of laws and we have a process by which laws are created. If a liberal state Rep would author a less ambiguous bill that does not threaten property owner's perceptions then maybe it would have a chance to pass. Until then all those who favored HB 391 can pound sand or just take a big Yoga breath about the whole thing.

PS - I am fully aware of the difference between land and water but the current laws tells me where I can and cannot go.

Zgisclair is exactly right. As a said 2 days ago, the bill as it was written had no chance to pass and I said it before the vote even took place.

JB, you are partly right but it is the level of skin in the game that is critical. If a citizen buys a fishing license and hunting license does that give him the right to chase those fish or that deer wherever he chooses? The answer is clearly NO ! But if you own land you should be able to govern that land the way you see fit. This is common sense for the most part, right ? With that being said , HB 391 is dead for now but I am sure another law maker will try to bring it back to life in 2019.

Never had a chance to pass. We elect lawmakers to uphold the law not bend it till it breaks.

It is called skin in the game. Landowners pay taxes, liability insurance and any associated costs of upkeep. This bill would potentially allow anyone to benefit from their investment but no have financial interest. That is a form of Socialism ( taking what is rightfully someone's and giving it to someone else to spread among the community ) I don't feel some wealthy guy should let me on his property if I have no skin in the game.

HB 391 if passed would simply advance Socialism. Is that a path we want to go down?

could not agree more. duck hunting needs to go back to basics so we can teach the next generation to appreciate its roots

A comment titled: Re: MOJO's need to go in response to a report titled: MOJO's need to go

bloodandguts, I am with you on this. I know guys who run well-known guide services for duck hunting and the one thing they all believe is that because of Mojos the mortality rate of young ducks in the middle and upper flyways has gone up tremendously in the last 10 years or so. Hunters in Missouri, Iowa, etc that used to kill only a few ducks have benefited greatly from mojos and are killing lots more birds than they ever did prior to mojos. This escalated mortality rate has caused the lower end of the central and Mississippi flyways to suffer because these young birds are falling victim to the mojos north of us and we are left with a higher proportion of older/wiser birds. Maybe this is why the breeding populations of ducks remain high but hunter success in Louisiana has gone down for some of us. Personally my club has killed more ducks this year that last year but with a higher number of divers. I choose not to hunt with mojos but have some of my members that do.

Anyone disagree or am I off base here? I would like to hear other opinions on the subject. This seems to be the elephant in the room that no one talks about.

tell you what you do, make sure you can get some little john's in glow/chartreuse and fish the south bank of the lake close to the bottom because there is a lot of freshwater in the lake due to heavy rains and the saltwater will be in the bottom third of the water column. go have some fun and be safe !!
