I would like the chance to use a cross bow! I also think it would be great if we were allowed to shoot deer at night and not have to count them against our limit.
We need to get together on this guys. Just think how great it would be to be allowed to shoot rabbits from your pick up truck at night, no more walking in briars.
You know what, I'm 48 years old and I have never shocked catfish, I have always wanted to see that done. The stories I've heard about it, sure sounds fun! And I bet even I could get a limit of ducks if only I were allowed to use a 22 with a silencer.
There are a lot of rules that need to be changed! I for one am getting tired of all you guys with your elitist attitudes concerning laws. Big deal you shoot a deer eating in a food plot, anyone can do that. If I shoot a deer from my truck window, while going 35 mph down a gravel road, while holding the light and the streering wheel, THAT'S a trophy.
Some of y'all make a good point.
There are more ducks killed opening weekend at Atchafalaya Delta WMA than are killed all season at Avoca Island hunting club, so why not let the guys at Avoca Island kill all the ducks that they want?
If y'all are seeing a bunch of mounds that are 3' high, that sounds like muskrats to me. Nutria usually make very low mounds, muskrats will have a much higher mound and will have quite a few in one area. If they are muskrats they are native to our State and won't cause the long term damage that nutrias do. Go back to the same area in a year and they will have moved on.
There is some real good red fishing at the Delta. You can pick up a few now, but the water is still a little high. Once the water clears up the grass beds in the cove behind Log Island is a great place for sight casting.
We have never done real good with specks but when the water is right you can find reds along all the channels.
Floor guy, I have not expressed my opinion on this yet, but yesterdays post from you brought up a VERY good point.
You feel that if they close the season at 2 pm there will be less boats at the landings and fewer people hunting? As a "local" then I say great! Then I won't have to try to launch my boat when the landing is full of a bunch of yahoo's who don't even know how to back up a boat trailer. On a serious note: I do hunt the Delta and yes the 2 pm closure will make it more difficult for some of the hunters, BUT it will make it better for the birds. And if something helps the ducks in the long run will help the hunters also.
Look at it this away, It would be a lot nicer for us hunters if the State would let us use airboats and 4 wheelers to hunt. And it would also be quicker to get a limit if we could bait ponds and use lead shot and guns with no plugs. But these rules (although they do restrict how we can hunt) are in place to help the ducks, which in turn really helps us hunters.
The 2 pm closure if passed will make it harder for some hunters in the short term, I can think of no bad affects on the duck population, which should be good for us hunters and our kids.
I agree with most everything that you said. He screwed up big time and he should have know better. But like you said, it's not like he was some anti gun advocate, he was one of our own. It's like sharks smelling blood in the water.
I may not agree with what Zumbo said but I am disappointed to see how fast my fellow sportsmen have turned on him. He has publicly said that he is sorry and regrets his remarks. Who among us has not stuck our foot in our mouth and said something that we wish we could take back. The man has always been a supporter of our rights, now his lively hood is gone.

Rear end shotBullet: The rear end shot is a poor shot for the firearm hunter. A shot to the body at this angle will probably ruin the best cuts of meat and will result in a "gut shot" (described above). A head or neck shot is possible if the animal has its head up. Wait for a better shot.
Texas heart shot? Are you saying you TRIED to shot a deer in the butt? And you don't understand why you lost your trophy deer?
Might just be the way I read it, but I have to agree with the other guys. A simple "great job" would have been enough with out the other negative comments.
Like moma use to always say "if you can't say something nice, don't say nutting at all".
You want to know if you can idle down the canal while drinking and shoot animals that you see on the bank? Yea, I say go ahead and do it, but don't blame the Game Warden when you get a big fine.
Are you real?? At a time like this you want to start talking about Rep. & Dem.?? What party was the Mayor for the last hundred years in New Orleans? What party is Blanco? If you can not help, don't make the problem worse. You want to know about St Bernard? The death toll is higher than anyone on the outside knows?
I have used the thermacell and it does work. I am still not convinced that it not alert deer though. I have only had 2 close encounters so far while I was useing it. The first I had an aprox. 250 lb bear pass within 8 yards of my stand. When he passed down wind he spooked, but who knows if he smelt me or the thermacell. The other I had about 7 pigs at a feeder 25 yards away with a light swirling wind. Every now and then one would look my way, but they stayed there for about 20 minutes and never did spook.
Read the original question. You yourself say that there are sometimes reasons where a deer will not grow more that spikes. There are other reasons beside the genes a deer has that can cause him to not grow a rack.
Besides, just because they have not isolated the "spike" gene does not mean that it does not exist. There is a lot more money being spent studing cancer genes and they still don't know everything that they need to wipe out cancer.
