I'm looking for a place to bring my 3 year old fishing this Sunday within 1-2 hrs of Baton Rouge. Just looking for some bream. Considering Old River but not sure if the small rise will turn the fish off Sunday. Any suggestions?

Fished the Leeville/Golden Meadow area last weekend. Friday was slow and ended up with only 6 reds, all 18-22 inches. All were caught on live cocahoe minnows on the bottom in 2-3 ft of clear water.

Saturday was much different despite the wind. We fished with Captain Vern Ledoux with Bayou Boyz Fishin and he didn't waste anytime putting us on the specs. First stop put 50+ 14'-18' trout in the ice chest by 9 am. The last 10-15 were much harder to catch with the tide leveling out mid-morning, but by noon we had our 3 man limit with 3 reds (including 1-34' bull red) and 3 flounder. There weren't many throw-backs at all and only a few specs were less than 14'. By 11:30 the bite was back on in full force. We could have easily ended up with another limit or 2 of nice trout. We tried to find a few more reds after catching our spec limit and mangled to put a couple in the boat before heading back to the launch. All fish were caught on live minnows under a popping cork. We will definitely be going back with Capt. Vern again. Had a great time and caught a bunch of fish. Already planning a trip in May.

Capt. Vern with Bayou Boyz Fishin can be reached at (337) 592-0003.

I need to have a couple bucket seats in a 99 Javelin repaired. They have removable cushions but I'm not sure where to buy more. Does anybody know of someone that can make me new ones or know a place that sells cushions? I would even consider buying some used seats someone is willing to sell. Any suggestions?

Any suggestions where to fish near Leeville this time of year with an 18 ft aluminum boat? We are staying at Boudreaux's next weekend and would like to fish within a reasonable distance from there but not sure where to go. We usually only fish the north side during the late fall but I know the fish are further out this time of year. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Looking for some tractor work to do on weekends. Bush hogging, grading, disking, seeding, etc. I can do food plots from start to finish. Live in Clinton. Will travel a reasonable distance. Call/text 225-229-4027 for estimates.

I am trying to plan a trip to Venice sometime this year with family from Florida. We would like to catch some reds and trout. When would the best time of year be to make a trip?

I finally got a chance to hunt somewhere other than the 5 acres we live on for the first time this year and it paid off. I saw 2 bucks Monday morning. The first came out on the edge of the cutover I was hunting about 7:15 am. It had 4 on one side but only one on the other. I decided to pass it up. I'm glad I did b/c at 10:05 the 8 pt came out of the woods about 75 yards to my right. I didn't give it a chance to make it all the way out in the cutover. It weighed 176 lbs with a 14 inch inside spread and 21 inch main beams.

A buddy of mine is trying to get a charter trip together in May inshore near either the Grand Isle or Venice area. Any ideas of charters and which area to go that time of year would be appreciated. They are planning to have 5 people on the trip. Thanks in advance.

We have a trip to Leeville Friday/Saturday this week. We are going to mainly try for reds but will switch to specs if they are biting better. Has anyone who has been down there lately have any tips on what to use and where to go (channels, duck ponds, or open lakes).

I am planning to make a trip to Leeville around Thanksgiving but was wondering if it would be better to fish a rising or falling tide. We are only going for a day and hope to catch the fish in the morning so I would like to find a day where the tide is good in the morning. We went a few years ago and tore up the trout on a rising tide one day but didn't do too well the day before on basically the same tide. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

I hunt in Pointe Coupee Parish and have some bears on the property. I've been feeding soy beans and haven't had a problem with them yet but I would like to try feeding rice bran. Would this be a bad idea? Does anyone know if the rice bran will attract the bears? Thanks for the help in advance.

Went to Old River (Morganza) this morning. Caught 10 sac-a-lait, 4 bream, and 1 catfish. Caught them all by piers in 10-15 f.o.w. by 9 am. Probably threw back another 15. The fish moved out to the rafts when the water heated up but with all the people there, it was almost impossible to find a good one to fish.

August 01, 2009 at 6:22pm

Went to Old River Saturday morning. Bass fished from daylight to 7:30 am with no luck. Started fishing sac-a-lait under a pier and it was on. Ended at 11:30 am with 68 fish total including 54 sac-a-lait, 11 bream, 2 catfish, and 1 striper. Probably caught 125-150 total and threw back a lot that were close to keeping size but didn't want to have to clean too many.

We went bowfishing Friday night with Marshmasters in Leeville, LA. We had 12 people on 3 airboats. All 3 boats ended the night with a limit of reds plus at least 10 sheepshead. My group went with Cpt. Tate and were the 1st to shoot our limit. We ended up with 20 reds and 16 sheepshead by 11:30 pm (fished from 9pm - 11:30pm). The other 2 boats were in by 2 am. Everyone should try this even if you've never shot a bow before. The one on our boat who had never shot a bow shot 8 fish. My 14 y.o. brother shot 6, my dad shot 6, and I ended with my personal best 16.

We made a trip to the camp at Old River this past weekend. Unfortunately, I didn't get to fish as much as I hoped b/c of 4th of July activities. We fished Saturday from about 7 am til about 1pm and caught about 10 of the 18 fish and fished Sunday from daylight til 10 am and caught the other 8. Besides midday Saturday, it was slow. We caught 2 of the 10 Saturday morning in Bundy Canal on shiners and caught the other 8 on one raft within an hour. We caught the 8 on the raft on the last 8 live shiners we had. We couldn't catch them on anything else. We started to ride back to the landing to get more bait but my wife wanted to go tubing instead. I gave in and didn't fish the rest of the day. Sunday morning we got out to Bundy canal before daylight where one boat was pulling in fish almost non-stop the day before but over 4 hours we only pulled in 8 good fish. There were a lot of gar around. We probably caught 15 garfish and 5 tiny bass. Overall, it was a fun weekend.

Me and my wife are making a trip to Grand Isle Wednesday - Friday. I am planning on bringing my boat but it is a 16 ft Xpress w/ a 50 so I can't really make a long run or go into open water. I am planning on surf fishing while we are down there. Does anyone have any tips about where to take my boat. We usually fish near Leeville but I think the trout would be further out right now. Should I try around Leeville or should I fish behind the island on Grand Isle? Would artificial be a better choice than live bait? Anything will be better than nothing. Thanks for any tips.

We went to a private pond early this morning to take out some of the over-populated bream and bass. Got there at 7 and had to wait til 7:45 to start fishing b/c of the rain. By 8:30 we had 3 bass and most of the 37 bream we kept, all of them hand-size. After catching the majority of the bream, we started bass fishing and caught b/w 5 and 10 more. We threw back all but 2 of the bass. We only kept the slim ones and threw the healthy ones back. The biggest bass was only about 1-1/2 lbs. but they look a lot better than they did a year ago. Also caught about a 4 lb catfish. All bream and catfish were caught on crickets and worms and bass were caught on everything from topwater to crank baits to crickets.

This is what's great about Old River. I took the wife out to Old River this morning to try to catch a few bluegill. We didn't have any luck with the bluegill in the first spot but saw a couple others pull a few in. We changed locations to get out of the wind and found a school of barfish (a.k.a. white bass) while trying to find some bream. In about 20-30 minutes, we caught 19 on crickets under a cork. Then the weather came in and we had to leave them biting.

We ended up keeping a bunch of white trout yesterday afternoon. Ended up with about 50 specks/whites. Threw back probably 150. It was nonstop but a ton of small ones. They seemed to be at the north ends of the lakes like Little Lake and Raccourci. You can probably find them in Catfish Lake.

I’m fishing Leeville today. Caught a lot of small ones this morning. Kept 17 specks and 3 white trout. Going back out after the tide starts moving again. Most caught on cocahoes. Caught some on plastic.

Thank you for the advise. I looked at a map. Is there a clearly marked path to get from Little Lake to Lake Raccourci? The last thing I want to do is run up on a mud flat.

Marshmasters is definitely the way to go. I will never go with anyone else. I've been 5-7 time and we shot our limit of reds every time except for once when we had mechanical issues. I think that was before they bought the new boats. We are going next Saturday. Can't wait.

Dont even crank the motor. Troll from the South Landing and follow the bank to the left and fish the coves. Watch for wasp nests.

I wouldn't waste my time at Old River right now. Go to this site for the river stages: The MS River flows into Old River when the Baton Rouge stage is about 15 ft and above. When the MS flows in and is rising, it's not worth a trip. When it is dropping later in the spring and the water temperature rises the fish will start biting. I would definitely try False River right now if you are going to choose one.

He weighed 176 lbs (about 140 gutted). His body was slim but his neck was definitely swollen. He was walking fast when I first saw him. Looked like he was looking for a doe. I used 'the can' doe bleat no more than 20 minutes before. I wouldn't be surprised if he was looking for it. He smelled like he was rutting.

A comment titled: Not advised in response to a report titled: Old River near morganza water level?

I would not advise you to hunt the flooded timber at Old River. There are 3 major hunting clubs that lease the land surrounding Old River and much of the land has been under water this season. It is the right of the members to hunt there but it is not made public just b/c it is flooded. I'm not saying it is illegal but those members pay thousands of dollars to hunt the land privately and if people start duck hunting around there freely, there will be a controversy. Fishing the flooded timber is different but I wouldn't get too far off the main channels during hunting season.

Thanks for the info. I have a trip planned Nov. 21st. Did you catch any reds? We've always done well on the reds in November in the canals off Bayou Blue and SW Canal (Shortcut Canal is a favorite).

Well, I wouldn't try Old River right now b/c the water is so high (which is rare this time of year). I would go with False River. I fished it a lot last year in the late winter/ early spring and did ok for a rookie. If you can find some tree tops, it's an easy place to fish. If I ever put some more deer meat in my freezer, I'll go out there with you. I know a few spots that always produce.

This anchor is the Real Deal...

I just took a look at the site. I made two of these at work and they work great. I don't know exactly how they make them, but all we do is weld a tapered plug on one end of a piece of 6' thick-wall stainless steel tubing and a ring joint on the other end.
