My sons and I were finally able to get together to do a holiday hunt. Meaux(11) crushed the brush to put up 5 limits. Taken with 410, 2 16g and 2 20g. Pic and Mojo given by Dave..

These pics are from 1st wk of January. I have been at work for 2 weeks and will be back for the last weekend (east split)In the era of 3 - 3 1/2' mag for ducks and geese it was a pleasure to watch my son tag more than a few with his 16 A-5. We know its an awesome gun for woodcock and ducks and, if given a chance, will take a few more next week.

Waiting on days off to duck hunt and it's killing me. My brother hunted East Point a la Hache and was back at the camp by 0730 with limits for 4. My son hunted 'my' duck lease in Whiteville and came home with limits for 3 plus a few specks. These pics are from a free dive trip about 2 months ago out of Freshwater City. After brushing the blind we saw a number of woodcock on the trip back home to Lafayette.

Well I got in one more hunt before the rain and the end of the season.Pearl put the evil eye on these and we finished in about 1 hour.Lloyd, I saw your truck, how did you do? Good luck to all until next year,I have some pictures other than todays.

January 31, 2008 at 2:44pm

Got back before the season closed. We had a pretty decent hunt in the basin .The dogs worked well and we shot well, even the old Lawyer in the glasses.Steve is from another hunt 2 days before. He is an att also.

Went to Indian Bayou today, man was it hot.It felt like summer time.We managed to flush about 10 but only came out with 2.Lost a bird for the first time this year.My Boykin and Lab hunted hard in the area it fell and my Boykin dug in a Armidillo hole for 10 min.She doesn't mess with them so we figured the bird went into it.She almost crawled all the way in,looked like a cartoon with the mud flying in Kennons face as he tried to get a closer look.2 or 3 other bird hunters were near us and headed the way we wanted to go so we zigged the other way.Didn't hear any more shots from them. We tried a new field, and flushed another 3 or 4 more.Met another bird hunter in the parking area, that was going to try a 1 1/2 in,as we were leaving.Good luck Lyd.Man did we make a dent in some 4'' saplings,I thought Widgeon6 was Paul Bunyon for a while, that bird lives for another day.

January 07, 2008 at 2:13pm

We had a good day hunting the Basin,it was warm but the birds were in.Going to try Tuesday with 2 friends again.Good luck to all.

January 07, 2008 at 7:06am

Took a short trip to ThistleW at 10 am.I hunted for 45 min and limited on some birds and an extra tree rat.I went yesterday with Tim A. to Sherburn and he limited out and I missed 4.I only flushed 3 today, but that was enough.I'll try again tomorrow with one of my sons.Widgeon06 if you want to go call me or post here.I really haven't found a lot but that changes 1 day to the next.We went duck hunting east of Widgeon6 lease about 6 miles 2 days ago and look at these pictures of Michael and some ducks

January 05, 2008 at 3:54pm

We hunted in blue bird skies and had a good day.The birds worked Tim's calls and Michael shot a few Mallards. Now if only the woodcock will show up.

January 02, 2008 at 7:34pm

Woodcock hunted in the basin today with Michael,Elliott,John T. and Steve W. One Golden,One Lab and a Boykin. The birds were not what we expected ,after the cold nite.Came out with 7 birds and 1 rabbit. Was going to try ThistleW but tried Ind.Bay.Met a few others Steve P's 2 boys were also there. They shot only 2 with there Britt and a squirrel.Very Very dry,no water even in ditches that I have never seen dry in 5 yrs.I'll be trying back at Sherb& ThistleW.It's a long walk between the Levee and the river at I.B. I need a break and cold weather

December 23, 2007 at 6:55pm

Hunted in the basin this morning with my Boykin and Lab.It took a while but I did limit out.Flushed 4 shot 3.All were shot in ox tail.I'll be back again with my three sons and a friend tomorrow.Maybe in Sherburn, another friend is making an afternoon hunt there. If he does well I may try there.Met 2 other young men at the check out and talked a while, they zigged when they should have zagged, but they said they will be back at it tomorrow also.

To answer your question, do I still hunt there. Not much, maybe 3 hunts a year. I use to only hunt there for ducks and woodcock but switched to hunting the basin. I hunt a lease north of the Mgt area near Whiteville and it's also $$.. I can remember more than a few yrs ago seeing 100's of birds there wood-ducks and a few mallards, and shooting limits of both with 6-10 hunters. The area held a lot of water in large ponds and coulees but the area has been logged and drainage changed. My lease started off great but warm weather brought only mosquitoes..If you can find water you should do a limit. Sherburne Mgt area has a lottery hunt for ducks on the south farm area, you may want to check that one out.

A word of warning on wood duck hunting on the pipeline toward the back parelling the limestone road. There is a private landholding that is off the pipeline and also crosses it and the road within Thistlewaite WMA. You should ask the GW to go over a map with you, so as you don't cross into the private area. That area is hunted for the large bucks that roam in that thicket. The boundary zigzags through that area so be carefull of trespass. I have hunted woodcock for years and have seen many ducks cross the pipeline but their flyway is very near the boundary. The bucks and ducks tend to hold in the woods near a slew that is both private and public. As with most WMA the private landholders within tend to want all of the area too themselves, Hey if you saw the horns I've seen maybe you would too. The one I saw two yrs ago almost had me wanting to deer hunt again after about 15 yrs, but I am a diehard bird hunter. Good hunting and take some kids with you..

A comment titled: Shell count in response to a report titled: how many shotgun shells?

Pumps and autos usually hold the same amount of shells. The plug limits you to 2 then 1 in the mag. Some autos come from the factory with a plug installed to limit the shell count to 3 overall. I have a 40 yr old Auto 5 that holds 5 total, same as a Remington 870 pump. Either way duck hunting, rabbit , woodcock, dove ,sq, only 3 shots are allowed. Even if deer hunting you may only have 3 shots. You may have 30 rounds legally in a centerfire but, get this, only 3 in a shotgun. The game wardens will ck that first, common sense plays no role in the amount of shells legally, a gun may carry. Shotguns may only carry 3 shells,on 99 percent of hunting . 22, and any other centerfire guns can carry as much as you want. If hunting a WMA you better ck all rules and regs and ck again. What you your friend or I think, matters none at all. The rules and regs on WMA change yearly and do not run the same as other seasons on private lands. IMO just put the plug in a shotgun andforgetaboutit. By the way I do need that 2nd and 3 shot while duck hunting, it gets the 2nd and 3rd duck. Legally I can only go boom boom boom.

I have a duck lease south of Kaplan. There is a marsh directly south of the lease with a Oak Ridge between. We have seen a number of birds flying out of the fields to the ridge, more than the ducks on the lease.I"ll be at em on Saturday somewhere in the Basin though.Private property on the ridge. We have been seeing birds throughout the first split, even when warm.Good sign the birds will be in S.La. on Saturday.

I almost went also but decided to go to Sherburn WMA.I hunted in the fields and saw at least 15 cars and trucks, 6 with trailers for dogs.I managed to flush 1 bird and missed,I saw where he landed but didn't follow up,I figured I had my chance.I heard only 1 or 2 other shots, and about 20 dog whistles.A buddy and his group hunted the far north of the WMA and he also scratched. It look as if the cold weather drove the birds away instead of bringing more in.Well it sounds as if you had a blast w/family, anyway, that's what is all about.Good luck Sat.Heck yea, take the old dog.

Pointing lab? man thats cool.Mine just flushes,he will pause on the scent most of the time, then rush in,but I am used to a Springer flushing anyway,I also have a Boykin that I got after the springer died, about 9 yrs ago, and its a flushing dog also.I went today and limited in Ind Bayou before the rains--and I won't argue with the black pot cooking either. If thats the only problem you have with your dog ,we should all wish for that.Good eating.

Man,thats a hunt. The only problem is how are you going to cook um.Gumbo or baked. How does your lab work on the birds? From the pictures it looks as if I don't have to ask.I couldn't go today due to honey dooos, hope for no rain tomorrow.I have a lab that works pretty well on both ret and flush. We seem to be finding all the birds in briars in 3-5 yr old fields.I used to hunt cane brakes in the woods.Well good luck, you have 1 more day.

Yes,I tried the field behind where we all hunted. If you were on the trail looking into the area we hunted,it would be behind and across the trail and canal. When walking in on the road,I went left behind and southwest of the buildings. The area has a lot of briars and low areas,I missed at least 5 birds and didn't chase any of them.I would have limited way to fast, and it was an exploratory hunt.

If you read my post to your concerns you should be able to tell there has never been a problem with us woodcock hunters and the deer hunters. What I am hearing from you is that you are concerned about the saftey and the possible crossing of paths between you and I.Well it sounds as if you have never crossed paths with a woodcock hunter, ever. Why worry about something that has never occured,I was there when you were hunting the other day and you never heard or saw me.You also state you don't want to infringe on woodcock hunters other than to cut our season in half and have us go somewhere else.Come on where the fairness in that statement. The same reasoning would suggest that all deer hunting has to stop because deer hunters cannot tell the difference between a 6 or 8 point buck and my 24 pound Boykin Spaniel.I know you are hunting trophy bucks in ThWMA and would not mistakenly shoot a 24 lb dog for a buck. You have a lease, good and I am sure you can get a deer there.I am not saying not to hunt ThWMA go ahead we can share all the acreage. The trophy deer I see there almost make me want to start deer hunting again. It is one of the best places to get a trophy in the state.Like Widgeon6 said if you step back and think about it no woodcock hunter ever crossed your path. How many other deer hunters can you say that about. The LWF has done a good job of catering to all of us who use the woods in whatever fashion. If we Balkinize hunting to bow, muzzle, shotgun, rifle, pistol, fishing it will be that much easier to shut the whole thing down.So lets just agree to disagree and enjoy what we have.Big Steve sorry to hear your family situtation, thanks for the comments from your side of the state, keep hunting and posting, maybe we can get together for a hunt next year,I'll be back offshore on Wed for the rest of the season.

Hey Widgeon6 I'll call tonite.I limited out again today, and almost shot at another tree rat.Well I have hunted the wildlife WMA's for over the past 35 years I can only remember seeing 2 or three hunters in a stand. We usually can see if a truck is parked in a certain area and we move to a different spot.ThistleW and Sherburn have a very good road system and its very easy to tell where someone is.Now as far as mistakenly shooting a deer hunter in a stand, come on...He would have to be one ugly dude, long beak and stubby wings and small brain pan.I've actually had deer hunters want to get in front of us to get what moves out of the thickets--this is wrong for a number of reasons and we won't do it.ThW is big woods that can be shared by all sportsman.Truth to tell most days you won't have 20 hunters in 12,000 acres and we mostly hunt very few.Have fun and take a kid with you.
