ATTENTION YAKERS: PLEASE USE CAUTION AT NEW LEEVILLE LAUNCH. STRONG CURRENT & MARINE TRAFFIC POSSIBLE.

I encourage everyone to wear their PFD while launching at the new Leeville kayak launch. This area of Bayou Lafourche tends to have a strong current. On windy days, launching while battling the wind and current, could make for a dangerous environment. This intersection is also heavily traveled by marine vessels. A safety flag is also encouraged by everyone. Let others see you, install a safety flag today. A $20 investment could save your life.

A PFD and a safety flag, a great combination while on the water.

We want everyone to be prepared prior to launching. This is a great launch, but a new area you are not used to. Enjoy!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

LEEVILLE BOAT LAUNCH CONSTRUCTION BEGINS

Mathews, Louisiana - Construction of the much-anticipated Leeville Boat Launch will begin next week, with completion projected for late October.

The $1.1 million recreational facility will be located at the site of the old Leeville draw bridge. The first phase will accommodate about 60 trucks with boat trailers, two 30 ft.-wide concrete ramps and a kayak launching area. Major work will include dredging, bulkhead and dock construction. Less than acre of mitigation is required.

A $487,000 federal grant from the Wildlife and Fisheries Wallop-Breaux fund is matched with $200,000 from the Greater Lafourche Port Commission and $413,000 from the Lafourche Parish Recreation fund to pay for the new boat launch.

GLPC Executive Director Chett Chiasson said: 'The Greater Lafourche Port Commission is pleased to be a project partner on this major investment in our Parish's infrastructure, and we very much look forward to seeing more residents and visitors alike out on the water enjoying our amazing environment.'

Future plans include the addition of a fishing wharf which will be handicap accessible. A $500,000 state grant secured by Sen. Norby Chabert will fund this next phase. And deliberations continue with the state Coastal Conservation Associati0n (CCA) to construct a coastal fisheries reef that would enhance the fishing in the area by attracting additional fish.

'Upon completion of this project, Lafourche will offer 9 FREE boat launches, from Leighton in the north to Port Fourchon in the south, to residents and visitors alike,' Lafourche Parish President Charlotte Randolph said. 'These facilities enhance recreation in Lafourche, and offer fishermen and families opportunity to enjoy our beautiful waterways.'

Coastal Marine Contractors of Slidell, Louisiana has been awarded the contract for the construction of the facility. Picciola & Associates engineering firm is designing the launch.

It is important to note that this construction site is closed. The construction zone will not be a place for visitors regardless of construction activities going on at any given time. The site is off limits for the safety of residents and construction workers.

May 08, 2014 at 1:56pm

The new boat launch is scheduled to begin May 5th. The contractor has 180 days to complete. Follow the progress on Launch Leeville's Facebook Fan Page!

A comment titled: Golden Meadow Launch Hole in response to a report titled: Now That It Got Cold, Where's It Good?

I have received reports, this honey hole was leased last year and no one is able to stand on the bank anymore. You are right, that was a great spot during the Winter on really cold days.

Leeville is very protected and popular too.

The fish have been equally on both sides of Leeville. The East or West was not better than the other from the various reports received. It was just a great week for fishing in and all around Leeville. Thanks!

Squid

I shared your same opinion and thoughts until there was actually some movement on the project today. Underground cables were marked, the Parish had staff there taking pictures, and contractor about to start.

It is a shame it took 6 years to get this promised project off the ground. The lost sales tax revenue from delaying this project over the past 6 years is mind boggling.

Keep the faith and stay tuned!

A comment titled: LEEVILLE in response to a report titled: NEW VIRUS STRAIN IN SOUTH LOUISIANA

Nice weekend for a change. North winds and little tide movement expected. Deep holes, light tackle, and smaller baits will help your odds.
In recent weeks the East side was the most productive. Check with Terry Serigny at his bait shop for any last minute reports while in Leeville. Captain Bob Gourgues of 'Between the Banks' fishing show can be found usually at Boudreaux's Motel during the weekends. Captain Bob is always eager to share hot spots too.

Good Luck!

A comment titled: LEEVILLE in response to a report titled: NEW VIRUS STRAIN IN SOUTH LOUISIANA

Lake Jesse, North Lake, and South Lake were all producing speck limits in the afternoon prior to the recent fronts. The weekend will be cold and breezy, not the best fishing conditions. If you consider gnats, this may be a perfect weekend without them. The cold temps will take the fish to the deeper holes again. Don't forget, when fishing the colder temps, fish are not agressive so use light line and light gear. Think small. With the windy conditions, low water will surely play a factor too. Live minnows have been the bait of choice lately. Good luck!

A comment titled: GNATS in response to a report titled: LAUNCH LEEVILLE

The gnats were horrible in Leeville on Friday. They have since slacked off and there is water in the marsh finally, thanks to the South East wind.

Good Luck
