We made a shoot em and stick em trip yesterday. The shoot em part started with a hunt in Lake Arthur over about 2000 silo socks, 4 wind machines and 2 e-callers. It was an impressive set up to say the least.
It has been out two weeks, but they have been averaging about 15 birds/day. We shot 6. We maybe saw 1500 snows the whole morning.
We made a hunt in the fog two Friday's ago. And like you would expect the geese do dumb things. 3 Snows came over at Ibis level. We saw them coming from far away. It was like everything was in slow motion as they were arriving. I pulled up on the lead bird and had to shoot it three times to kill it. It was 40 yards too! It landed right in front of us with a crash!!! The other two.... Read More
I had the privilege of being invited to a nice duck camp/duck spot south of Lake Charles (Holmwood) on Saturday morning.
It is kind of newer and the guy has put a lot of work into it bulding the duck camp and cutting back weeds to make hidey holes for the ducks. There is an overabundance of food for the ducks. Where are the ducks though?
I could almost hear the sucking sound as.... Read More
I knew it was going to be a good morning when I was peeing. In my pre coffee blur I had put my hat on crooked. I could feel it coming off my head as I was tinkling, but my reflexes were just too slow to catch it. The hat fell and was heading directly for the toilet, but by some miracle the bill hit the edge of the toilet and deflected off of the toilet instead of into the tee water! “IT.... Read More
We had a nice hunt on the bayou Thursday (11/21). I had an invite to hunt with a buddy that kills a couple of hundred ducks every year off of the bayou. When he told me he killed that many I was hesitant to believe it, but I came around after this trip.
It was foggy and gross. Variable light wind with mosquitoes drifting here and there. We met at the pre-designated location. It was a.... Read More
My guess in non-poisonous because of the rounded eyes. However, when I picked it up it smelt really bad. Just like a copperhead or cottonmouth. I am still leaning toward texas rat snake or Water snake.
Someone was doing some shooting this morning! I mean every 5-10 minutes there was a volley of shots. I am not sure I have ever heard that type of shooting where I am. Anywho, it started with a red squirrel who was running up a bent tree. It was so early I kind of had to guess on the shot. After the second shot I heard the 'kerthump', so I knew I had fell the critter.
A good friend died on Wednesday. We did quite a bit of duck hunting together and I will miss him greatly. I guess I am posting this because I want people to get a feel for what type of individual he was.
I picked Eursin Breaux up around 2:00 A.M.. Imagine a 60 year old man going to a public NWR duck hunting at that age and at that time in morning. You don’t see very many.
Made a night fishing trip with my buddy on the south end of Big lake. We got a bunch of lights, 12 volt batteries, caught some bait and made it out to the spot right about dusk. Let me go back a step. We were cast netting for big mullet at the pogey plant when one of the captains hollered at us. We went to visit him and he said he had caught about 1800 tons that week and had some extra. He.... Read More
Me and a buddy hit chicot this afternoon. We actually started fishing around lunch. I wanted to try a completely new area, one that I had been scoping, that looked really good for Sac-a-lait..........Wrong! We fished about 5 hours through a series of banks. Fished minnows, worms and jigs at varied depths and had a few bass and one sac-a-lait to show for it. That's Chicot though.
We had a good trip to Larto Thursday thru Saturday. We stayed at good ol' Uncle Bud's RV Park. I can't say enough good things about that place.
I got there there on Thursday and fished for a few hours but didn't find but one stud sac-a-lait. I caught him about 2 foot behind a cypress tree. I should've figured it out then but didn't. Me and a buddy burnt the next morning slugging it out.... Read More
When I go specklebelly hunting on cold mornings (freezing and below) it is extremely difficult for me to keep my lips sealed on the call. When I exhale into the call air escapes in between the edge of my lips and the outside of the call....It ends up just being a spitting noise that comes out of the call...My mouth gets numb and caput on the calling. It is.... Read More
