To make a long story short it will be the highlight of my summer and something my lackluster memory won't forget!
Now the long story. It started about 5 years ago. Me and a few rabble rousers from work planned a trip to go Tuna fishing. One or two of them dropped out and the plan was killed. Hey with prices like they are for a trip like this I couldnít afford to eat the extra cost. ....
Good and Fun Basin trip!
Why not? Its that time of year, the time when the Bream should be working themselves into a frenzy of a thousand piranhas. We decided the North end of the basin was the place for us. Easy to get to, Cheap, not very many people.
I went outside at 5:30 and it was a bit nipply. About 62 degrees to be exact. On the trip I had my son who actually wanted to go....
We made a trip to the rock. I arose at 4:30 feeling spry and ready for whatever the day held. My sister made it on time and the boat trailer lights miraculously worked fine. This was the omen I needed to feed my optimism.
We arrived at the launch with only one boat there; not promising. The next step was bait and my first cast netted a 2.5 foot gar that....
I haven't had a chance to do much fishing lately, but have been having these vivid dreams of large black flounder and man eating Sacalait. Thank God I caught some fish on this outing. Maybe the lucid dreams will subside.
We had been planning a trip to Wildwood Resort at Toledo Bend for quite some time. With everything in check and the boat full of fishing tackle + all sorts of Child....
We did like a baby; Head out! Nothing was going to stop us. We arrived at Uncle Budís Tuesday without incident. We put the boat in the water and got to the magic spot and noted that the water had spilt over the bank we normally get em on. No problem, I will just put on my chest waders and fish the bank from the back side of the trees. As we drove over where the bank used to be we just kept....
We are keepin on with the keepin on em this year. We made a quick hunt before the storm this morning in some private marsh south of Lacassine. With the south wind blowing at a brisk 15 mph and a nice sheltered pond I thought it was gonna be on and I was right.
The bad news is there was just two of us. First thing this morning 4 teal dropped almost vertically on us. They came to my....
For us hunting has remained outstanding with the exception of this morning. We've been counting in sixes pretty routinely. I have made three duck hunts since second season opened. The first two were really good. Today was so so.
Opening day second split a buddy and me went energy spending. We put out about 5-6 dozen finely detailed decoys. Teal, pintail, greys, mallards and wood....
I got a chance to take my son out the last weekend before first season closed. He is 9 and is shooting his .410 at everything so I thought what better time!
We got to the camp Friday afternoon late. We didn't have any hide on the blind, so we went driving around in the mud boat looking for roseau for the blind. Not fun to do in the fog! We made it work though and got to bed about....
This season has started off really good for us. Opening day last weekend we hit a spot where the Mallards wanted to be and finished with 11. I can't recall killing so Many Mallards in the marsh on opener. That really was a special hunt.
This past Friday I got an invite to Port Acres, TX for a marsh hunt and from the moment we started pushpoling the marsh you could hear the....
We made a shoot em and stick em trip yesterday. The shoot em part started with a hunt in Lake Arthur over about 2000 silo socks, 4 wind machines and 2 e-callers. It was an impressive set up to say the least.
It has been out two weeks, but they have been averaging about 15 birds/day. We shot 6. We maybe saw 1500 snows the whole morning.
We made a hunt in the fog two Friday's ago. And like you would expect the geese do dumb things. 3 Snows came over at Ibis level. We saw them coming from far away. It was like everything was in slow motion as they were arriving. I pulled up on the lead bird and had to shoot it three times to kill it. It was 40 yards too! It landed right in front of us with a crash!!! The other two....
I had the privilege of being invited to a nice duck camp/duck spot south of Lake Charles (Holmwood) on Saturday morning.
It is kind of newer and the guy has put a lot of work into it bulding the duck camp and cutting back weeds to make hidey holes for the ducks. There is an overabundance of food for the ducks. Where are the ducks though?
I could almost hear the sucking sound as....
I knew it was going to be a good morning when I was peeing. In my pre coffee blur I had put my hat on crooked. I could feel it coming off my head as I was tinkling, but my reflexes were just too slow to catch it. The hat fell and was heading directly for the toilet, but by some miracle the bill hit the edge of the toilet and deflected off of the toilet instead of into the tee water! ďIT....
We had a nice hunt on the bayou Thursday (11/21). I had an invite to hunt with a buddy that kills a couple of hundred ducks every year off of the bayou. When he told me he killed that many I was hesitant to believe it, but I came around after this trip.
It was foggy and gross. Variable light wind with mosquitoes drifting here and there. We met at the pre-designated location. It was a....
My guess in non-poisonous because of the rounded eyes. However, when I picked it up it smelt really bad. Just like a copperhead or cottonmouth. I am still leaning toward texas rat snake or Water snake.
Someone was doing some shooting this morning! I mean every 5-10 minutes there was a volley of shots. I am not sure I have ever heard that type of shooting where I am. Anywho, it started with a red squirrel who was running up a bent tree. It was so early I kind of had to guess on the shot. After the second shot I heard the 'kerthump', so I knew I had fell the critter.
A good friend died on Wednesday. We did quite a bit of duck hunting together and I will miss him greatly. I guess I am posting this because I want people to get a feel for what type of individual he was.
I picked Eursin Breaux up around 2:00 A.M.. Imagine a 60 year old man going to a public NWR duck hunting at that age and at that time in morning. You donít see very many.
Made a night fishing trip with my buddy on the south end of Big lake. We got a bunch of lights, 12 volt batteries, caught some bait and made it out to the spot right about dusk. Let me go back a step. We were cast netting for big mullet at the pogey plant when one of the captains hollered at us. We went to visit him and he said he had caught about 1800 tons that week and had some extra. He....
Me and a buddy hit chicot this afternoon. We actually started fishing around lunch. I wanted to try a completely new area, one that I had been scoping, that looked really good for Sac-a-lait..........Wrong! We fished about 5 hours through a series of banks. Fished minnows, worms and jigs at varied depths and had a few bass and one sac-a-lait to show for it. That's Chicot though.
We had a good trip to Larto Thursday thru Saturday. We stayed at good ol' Uncle Bud's RV Park. I can't say enough good things about that place.
I got there there on Thursday and fished for a few hours but didn't find but one stud sac-a-lait. I caught him about 2 foot behind a cypress tree. I should've figured it out then but didn't. Me and a buddy burnt the next morning slugging it out....
