Not a big fan of February fishing, but needed to run the boat. So, I got up early (9AM) and rushed out the door (12PM). Yeah, right. But was in Oak River fishing by 2PM and got a few throwback reds, no keepers. Sun was out, so hit a current line in nearby lagoon point, and nice trout starting hitting minnows under a cork. They did not want anything on the bottom. Then they quit, so headed in..... Read More
Update on a few reports. My daughter Katie joined me New Years Eve for a Hopedale trip. A front had gone through and I knew it would be tough. Plan A was trying the close spots that had produced fish, no luck, even with the sheephead. Plan B, brought out the rock dam anchor (cinder block on a rope) and freelined some shrimp. A few sheephead were there but slow and nothing else, and it was.... Read More
How about a report on somewhere else other than Oak River? Some of us don't like boat parking lots, LOL. I've also challenged myself the last few weeks to try and catch fish on 4 gallons of gas or less near Hopedale. With the colder weather and water temps 50-53, its been a challenge. Found trout and sheephead in the bends of bayous in the back of Lena's and marsh south of BSM. Also fishing.... Read More
Fished Sunday Hopedale post-front, quite cold. Couldn't fish pre-front Saturday due to other plans, so you take what you can get. Water temp low 50s, so first tried a sheephead hole, water was pouring through from the stout NW wind, scattering them and making it difficult to fish. Decided to fish scout new grounds, looking for deep cuts between ponds in the back of Lena's. Found a slow but.... Read More
Catching up on a few Hopedale reports. Last Saturday Jerry and I fished mid-morning to afternoon. Water 50F. Found a few throwback trout in Muscle and lots of boats. Tried some lagoons further back, a couple of half-hearted takedowns and one lost red, still lots of boats. Went even further back on Biloxi Bayou and finally got on a trout bite in the deeper water. Got 12 keepers and its slowed..... Read More
Catching up on a few trips. Last Saturday (11/16) my Father-in_law and I did an afternoon trip out of Hopedale. First fished the rocks dam, Jerry fought a bull red we had to chase. Afterwards, thought we would find some nice logs on the edges in Christmas Camp, nope, a just a few scattered 10-12 inchers. Worked our way back down Loutre to Pete's, Muscle, then Baker's for the incoming tide,.... Read More
Fished last Saturday and Sunday in windy conditions. Was supposed to paint the Hopedale camp Saturday, but got word someone stole the stored paint and supplies, nice. So, did a close trip to Chef Pass Saturday morning. Found one cluster of throwback reds and a nice 2-3 lb bass at the mouth of one bayou. Tried another bayou mouth, and the reds grew up, limiting on 20-22 inchers. Took a food.... Read More
Did a solo trip in Lake Pontchartrain, launching out of Chef Pass Marina. Started off with a dead truck battery and not much tidal movement, wondering if I should have stayed in bed. First hit the east shoreline, caught a 29-inch red and 2 throwback drum. Several spots no bites. Worked my way to a bayou on the south shore and with a trickle of an incoming tide found the ultimate mix of fish:.... Read More
Did an afternoon trip at BSM last Sunday (10/20). Wow, a crush of people. That's what happens without a Saints game I guess. My wife Lisa and work friend Haibo joined us. We fished close for an hour to catch the end of the falling tide (just one red and trout), then made the run out to Christmas Camp to catch the incoming tide switch.
Took a day off and fished Friday out of Hopedale in 25-mph north wind gusts. Perfect, it kept away the gnats. The keeper trout didn't seem to like it much either (about 15 throwbacks), with the high pressure and water getting dirty in some places. But other fish didn't mind. We did the stick and move in back of Pete's Lagoon, getting 1 here, 2 there, then found a school of drum mixed with.... Read More
Two fishing reports out of Hopedale. Went Wednesday morning with my daughter Megan joining me, who got a day off work. With the water up, we first tried for reds in a lagoon off Loutre and got 3 plus a couple of accidental trout. The tide was now falling, so we decided to try for trout in Christmas Camp, Treasure Bay, and Morgan Harbor. Mostly throwback trout plus 2 bull reds, another red, and a.... Read More
Launched out of BSM Saturday with my Father-in-Law Saturday morning. We first tried Lake Borgne, which normally has chunky trout this time of year. WARNING.....the Corps Contractor putting rock protection in Lake Borgne has a chunk of rocks out in the open near the mouth of St. Malo that will be barely sticking up in high water condition. Follow new cones out and be careful.
Quick report. With bad weather expected this weekend, my coworker Haibo joined for me a quick late Friday afternoon trip out of Hopedale's BSM. We picked away at different close spots in Bayou Bernard area. Got chased in by rain near sunset, but had 8 reds. Bumped into a few throwback trout, but no keepers yet. Soon. Very soon.
With 'Fall' fishing starting, trying to get back on the water. Trailer axle also went kaput, Boat Stuf fixed it up.
Did a solo scouting trip Saturday. Water temp still mid-80s, not conducive to marsh fishing. The marsh is still full of cats and juvenile mangrove snapper, a sure sign of hot water. After picking up one red in Lake Robin, headed to the edges of Fortuna, and found 20-25.... Read More
Tried Hopedale Saturday morning with wife onboard. With rain everywhere east, we stayed close, and in the first hour, we caught one small flounder, nothing else. I was hoping the rain would stay east so we could catch the falling tide for reds, but the rain backed up on us. Rather than torture my wife, we packed up early.
Sunday morning, more rain, so slept in. But, it.... Read More
Went fishing Saturday out of Hopedale with Father-in-Law Jerry. We first gave the trout a go in Machias, Fortuna, and edge of Black Bay for two hours. Absolutely nothing, trout were not biting in this area.
We went Plan B for meatfish. Found some nice reds and sheephead on one island with a reef. They seemed to hold up in pockets, so we caught what we could, and kept making small moves on.... Read More
Made first serious fishing trip in a few weeks at Hopedale now that the salinity is improving and I can fish the edges in my flatboat. My Father-in-Law Jerry joined me July 4th.
We first stayed close to monitor for rain and wind. After catching just two reds, the weather looked doable so we made the jump, working our way out. After a few stops, we found fish in Machias, catching a dozen.... Read More
