Inshore Fishing in Lake Borgne / Chef Menteur

  • Ice chest filling up.
Another Friday trip......today Haibo and Jerry joined me at Chef Pass. Tide movement (falling) was in the afternoon, so we launched at 10AM. Caught the end of the incoming tide at Chef Pass, just 1 trout. There was no wind, so I did something I love to do but usually can't....run to Proctor's Point.

We first fished the east side at an area which usually has current. We arrived and in....  Read More

Fishing in Lake Borgne / Chef Menteur
Sometimes things go wrong in bunches. One of my trailer boards broke last trip, so I launched the boat at the house in Eden Isles and we fixed the trailer in the driveway. Since the boat was already in the water, Friday made a brief evening trip to the Rigolets, only one nice trout but well-stocked with live shrimp for the next morning.

Saturday morning made the run across Lake P to the....  Read More

Fishing in Lake Borgne / Chef Menteur
Did a 'banker's hour' trip today (as The King calls it) out of Chef Pass. Fished 11AM-1PM for part 1. Found one keeper trout and some bass back in the marsh in one area, then tried east Lake P with nothing but catfish, and it was time for lunch. Water was beat up but fishable and getting better, so there was hope for later.

Tied the boat up at the local eatery's dock, and watched the....  Read More

  • Another fun (but hot) morning
Launched out of Hopedale Thursday. Even though it was October, it was already in the 80s, sunny, and a dewpoint of 79...quite oppressive. With water temps back up, fished the protected shoreline of the cooler Lake Borgne and its ponds. Water was up but falling tide began about 9AM.

Not much in the early morning, just a few throwback reds, one nice red, and lots of trash fish stealing the....  Read More

  • Lisa with a nice red, off an island point.
  • Civil twilight, Bayou Loutre
  • Ten reds, ten trout. Plenty enough, went home.
A couple of reports. Hit the ponds in Chef Pass last Sunday. The real motivation was to watch the Saints game at the local eatery, but spent some time earlier messing around with the bass and reds in the local ponds with shrimp. Not much tide, and it when the tide quit, it was Saints time. Two keeper reds, and it will be getting better now until late November.

Yesterday my wife joined me....  Read More

A couple of reports. Yesterday my Father-in-Law Jerry joined me for a trip out of Hopedale. Some rain was moving through the Biloxi Marsh and the east wind was kicking, so we headed south to Bayou Bernard marsh and Lake Robin east side. The keeper trout are starting to show up on the inside, as we finished with 9 keepers. We focused more on meatfish on points, ponds, and Lake Robin shoreline....  Read More

  • Where and what is history of this camp?
Is this the old WLF camp near Lake Borgne? Found this image uploaded in Google Earth today. Location looks wrong in Google maps, heard it was near Janke's Ditch. Or is this a hoax someone pulled on Google?

Thursday LDWF will present data that could cause a decrease in 25-trout/person limits. Don't shoot the messenger.

http://www.nola.com/outdoors/index.ssf/20 14/06/louisiana_to_explore_altering.html

The LDWF will report that the spawning potential ratio, a number that indicates how abundant a fish stock is compared to what the population would be if they were unfished, are lower....  Read More

Been getting some reds and drum the last few weeks, and sometimes trout. Best conditions for reds are incoming tide or when water is up.

Saturday worked in the shed and watched the radar, waiting for a break in the rain. Saw an opening for late afternoon, and jumped in the truck for BSM. With low pressure and east winds, water was up. Started off in Bakers Canal and got a couple of reds,....  Read More

Inshore Fishing in Delacroix Island in Southeast Louisiana
Not a big fan of February fishing, but needed to run the boat. So, I got up early (9AM) and rushed out the door (12PM). Yeah, right. But was in Oak River fishing by 2PM and got a few throwback reds, no keepers. Sun was out, so hit a current line in nearby lagoon point, and nice trout starting hitting minnows under a cork. They did not want anything on the bottom. Then they quit, so headed in.....  Read More

Inshore Fishing in Shell Beach / Hopedale / Reggio in Southeast Louisiana
Update on a few reports. My daughter Katie joined me New Years Eve for a Hopedale trip. A front had gone through and I knew it would be tough. Plan A was trying the close spots that had produced fish, no luck, even with the sheephead. Plan B, brought out the rock dam anchor (cinder block on a rope) and freelined some shrimp. A few sheephead were there but slow and nothing else, and it was....  Read More

  • pre-front, better variety
  • Sluggish trout, didn't need much ice this day
How about a report on somewhere else other than Oak River? Some of us don't like boat parking lots, LOL. I've also challenged myself the last few weeks to try and catch fish on 4 gallons of gas or less near Hopedale. With the colder weather and water temps 50-53, its been a challenge. Found trout and sheephead in the bends of bayous in the back of Lena's and marsh south of BSM. Also fishing....  Read More

Inshore Fishing in Shell Beach / Hopedale / Reggio in Southeast Louisiana
Fished Sunday Hopedale post-front, quite cold. Couldn't fish pre-front Saturday due to other plans, so you take what you can get. Water temp low 50s, so first tried a sheephead hole, water was pouring through from the stout NW wind, scattering them and making it difficult to fish. Decided to fish scout new grounds, looking for deep cuts between ponds in the back of Lena's. Found a slow but....  Read More

  • After front, fish the sheephead while waiting for the trout to warm up
Catching up on a few Hopedale reports. Last Saturday Jerry and I fished mid-morning to afternoon. Water 50F. Found a few throwback trout in Muscle and lots of boats. Tried some lagoons further back, a couple of half-hearted takedowns and one lost red, still lots of boats. Went even further back on Biloxi Bayou and finally got on a trout bite in the deeper water. Got 12 keepers and its slowed.....  Read More

  • Now is the time.
  • Last weekend required stick and move, but the box filled up.
Catching up on a few trips. Last Saturday (11/16) my Father-in_law and I did an afternoon trip out of Hopedale. First fished the rocks dam, Jerry fought a bull red we had to chase. Afterwards, thought we would find some nice logs on the edges in Christmas Camp, nope, a just a few scattered 10-12 inchers. Worked our way back down Loutre to Pete's, Muscle, then Baker's for the incoming tide,....  Read More

  • This 2-3 lb bass took a free-lined live shrimp
  • A good reason to fish Biloxi Marsh on Sunday evenings.
Fished last Saturday and Sunday in windy conditions. Was supposed to paint the Hopedale camp Saturday, but got word someone stole the stored paint and supplies, nice. So, did a close trip to Chef Pass Saturday morning. Found one cluster of throwback reds and a nice 2-3 lb bass at the mouth of one bayou. Tried another bayou mouth, and the reds grew up, limiting on 20-22 inchers. Took a food....  Read More

  • Sunday's Lake P ultimate mix.
Did a solo trip in Lake Pontchartrain, launching out of Chef Pass Marina. Started off with a dead truck battery and not much tidal movement, wondering if I should have stayed in bed. First hit the east shoreline, caught a 29-inch red and 2 throwback drum. Several spots no bites. Worked my way to a bayou on the south shore and with a trickle of an incoming tide found the ultimate mix of fish:....  Read More

Catching up on reports.

Did an afternoon trip at BSM last Sunday (10/20). Wow, a crush of people. That's what happens without a Saints game I guess. My wife Lisa and work friend Haibo joined us. We fished close for an hour to catch the end of the falling tide (just one red and trout), then made the run out to Christmas Camp to catch the incoming tide switch.

Never found trout....  Read More
