Did a solo trip Saturday out of Hopedale. Not much tide range but was falling as the strong winds (which had pushed up water levels) had eased a little bit. Fished lagoons and shorelines off Loutre, then Two Trees and Robin on the way in. Mostly small throwback trout inside now, but got a couple of nice ones. Best redfish bite once again was in Robin.
Bad trout trip, made up for it with Plan B. My wife Lisa joined me for a trip out of BSM. We decided to first give the trout a try. A 10-mph SE wind stopped us from going to the Rocks, so we tried Machias. An hour later, only two keeper 12-inch trout. Tried the birds, just gafftop. This area used to produce trout for me in late May, but not the last three years.
Launched out of Hopedale Sunday with my sister Kelly. Late night graduation activities, no sunrise start. The SE winds were 10-15 mph, a tad bit high, so we skipped the original destinations (Two Trees, Machias, etc), and went Plan B, the lagoons off Loutre.
It worked out reasonably well. We got a mixed box of reds, 1 large sheephead, and a few trout. Also had some throwback reds, trout,.... Read More
Saturday my Father-in-Law saw windows of opportunity and we took it. We launched from Campo's Saturday at noon, but rain was coming again so we stayed close. After several moves with nothing, we found some trout and a couple of reds in a nearby pond. The rain started and we took shelter at Campo's.
During that time, one of the young marina boys fished around the dock, threw under my boat, and.... Read More
Launched out of Breton Sound Marina Thursday with my Father-In-Law. White caps in Bayou Loutre, wind gusts 30 mph. Water clarity was lousy in most locations. Oh well, no gnats. We tucked into the back ponds of Coquille and Two Trees for cleanest water, beaching the boat on islands and shorelines where we could keep the wind to our back and hit ponds and points. Grinding it out, we got some reds..... Read More
A fishing report! It's about 1-2 weeks early, but my Father-in-Law Jerry was hankering for a trip. Launched at 10AM (lazy, and high tide late afternoon). Water temperature was in the upper 50s and east wind of 10 mph becoming 20 mph in afternoon. Iffy conditions, not sure what to expect.
Started in Lake Robin, and found steady action on the bottom over an oyster reef for.....big sheephead? My.... Read More
Put together a nice stringer of fish. Going to release them Friday night, Float 11 in Morpheus, 3rd person lower deck, driver side. Float title 'Devil Wears Prada.' Just yell Dr Spot or LAS.
Went out Sunday with Father-in-Law out of Hopedale. Wanted something that pulled, so went to Eloi shorlines. Each hooked a bull red. His line broke, mine made it to net. Weighed 18.3 lbs on scale. Then it quit. Worked our way back through marsh. Just one nice trout and 5-lb red, plus a few dink taps. Probably last trip until mid March. Time to complete the annual bucketlist of winter projects.
Got up this morning to rain, wind, and cold, so headed back to bed. Hit Oak River in the afternoon just when the rain ended. As others have reported, several Delacroix fishermen told me the trout bit this morning for those brave enough to fish in the rain. Naturally, I missed it but still did okay on Plan B.
When it became obvious the trout had lockjaw (no bumps, and saw no trout in the three.... Read More
Some doofus started fireworks outside my house at 3AM Jan. 1. Since I was now awake, I made an early trip to Hopedale. First hit the Sheephead hole (fish insurance) in St. Malo, and they were silly thick. Some smaller males mixed with the females. Kept 10 of the big ones, then moved on to the Biloxi Marsh.
Since fish were caught Monday in the Biloxi Marsh, I had expectations on a good bite..... Read More
Gave Hopedale a shot Saturday, launching at 8AM. Even though the temperature plummeted overnight, and the wind howled out of the NW, the gages at 5AM showed the water levels ok, providing a window of opportunity. I first targeted sheephead, and they cooperated in St. Malo. Once I got them going, the ice chest filled up quickly with large females, interrupted by a 12-lb red (weighed on LDWF.... Read More
Fished yesterday from 12:30 to 5PM with my daughters in the Biloxi Marsh. Had hoped the water would warm up but never got much above 55F. Tried some sheephead holes, no luck. Fished Pete's, Muscle, and Loutre for 3 keepers (a flounder, red, and nice trout) plus a few throwback trout, drum, and sheephead.
So, instead we watched the hawks and owls on Loutre. Then, since cleaned ducks had.... Read More
My Father-in-Law made me a HUGE, homemade fish-cleaning table for Christmas, so I decided to break it in Saturday. Launched out of Hopedale, tried 3 spots in St. Malo....all 6-inch trout. Nope, I wasn't going through that trout pecking exercise again like two weeks ago, the table demanded real fish.
So, Plan B. Tried a sheephead hole in St. Malo with market shrimp, and they have finally.... Read More
Haven't fished in a couple of weeks, but I got an early fishing present from Father-In-Law, and I guess we got to break it in this weekend :) See you all in the Biloxi Marsh Saturday.
Went out Sunday with Tony Piazza out of Hopedale. Tony threw lures, and I went with live bait (cocohoe minnows). Not the trip we hoped for, but we still got fish. Very small trout have invaded the marsh....probably the next recruitment class of baby trout has gotten big enough to start hitting baits. We fished the Biloxi marsh, went east to catch the tide switch, then back through Halfmoon and.... Read More

Have a few fishing reports to catch up on, all afternoon somewhat casual trips.
Fished last Wednesday afternon in Dave Lemonier's bayboat on a scouting trip. We launched out of the Rigolets and ran across Lake Borgne on a calm day to the Biloxi Marsh. I have to admit, its nice when one can do that! We got 5 nice reds, 1 drum and about 15 trout on a no-tide day, plus throwback reds and trout..... Read More
Hit Hopedale Saturday with Dave Lemonier and Jacob for a serious trout trip. We found three pods of trout in the Lena Lagoon and Pete's Lagoon area, getting a 3-man limit. We would catch them, and quickly pull anchor if it quit (they usually don't come back or we've already caught everything there). It really helps to have two guys 'armed and ready' with a trout arsenal. Dave used lures,.... Read More
Flat boat is now 7 years old. When new, it had some substance on bottom to provide traction. Its worn out now, and with all the fish flopping on the floor (ha!) its becoming slippery. Any suggestions?
