Freshwater Fishing in Southeast Louisiana
Has anyone else heard of a lot of shark activity in Lake Maurepas as of late?
My friend fishes commercially , currently fishing several trot lines. Lately he has been catching plenty of catfish,, but only heads remain.

I read that the shark fishing is closed until July 1st. Is there a breeding season that dictates the closing? Is the Lake Maurepas an estuary for young toothed critters.... Read More

Your State Legislature has given final approval to two anti-gun bills -- House Bill 717 and Senate Bill 135.

These bills would establish a “mental health” reporting scheme designed to strip more law-abiding residents of Louisiana of their gun rights WITHOUT DUE PROCESS!

Worse, your Governor, Bobby Jindal.... Read More

I know it’s difficult for you guys to stay on top of all the scammers posting on this site.
I have noticed since you have added the 'Flag as Scam' alert link to the bottom of the individual ads, the evident scam ads do not stay up as long.

Thanks to those members too who take the time to flag these scams as it helps unclutter the site as well as assist in keeping someone from getting taken.... Read More

I got a good deal here on two HDS 5 units, non gen 2's.

My question is, with the LSS-1 I have, and using one skimmer, can I utilize both HDS 5 units at the same time, one for down scan and the other for side scan?

Would that only require another cable from the LSS to the 2ed HDS unit?

Thanks,R

Contact the LOWRANCE SUPPORT SECTION
~ Captain Paul's response to: ~ AllisonXR-01, “R”

Yes, I believe that you can, but don’t put the screen part or the transducers of the systems close to each other. Sometimes two such units can cause interference with one another. You could see about getting a switch for the transmission cable but I don’t think that they use the same electronics.

To be sure, call the Lowrance Support Section at 1-800-324-1356 and get the correct way to accomplish your installation.

Please let me know what you find out.

Yesterday while sitting on my dock enjoying a lunch with my sister, there was one of them high dollar 35ft, twin engine open exhaust tunnel hulls making its way upriver , and really gunning on it. As the boat passed, the exhaust note ,altho sweet to my ears, rattled the inner chest like thunder. As I was checking out some eye candy on the back of the boat, I noticed the water on the other bank.... Read More

This is interesting :

A Utah hunter is recovering from a birdshot wound in his buttocks caused when his dog stepped on his shotgun on Sunday, The Desert News reports.

The unnamed man from Brigham City was duck hunting with a buddy at the Great Salt Lake. He laid his 12-gauge shotgun on a boat's bow when he got out of the craft, according to the paper. His dog jumped on the bow, causing.... Read More

Found this below French Settlement yesterday. Approx. 3 feet and close to 20-25 lbs. Called LA. wildlife and fisheries, reported the thing and location. Don't know if it died in the river system or was tossed into the river. Either way, it's a depressing sight to see,,, knew it was a matter of time after the spillway dumped them into Lake P.

My only experience with side imaging units was on an old Bottomline unit years ago.

I have a question or two,,, Can the new Lowrance (HDS) or Hummingbird(1179) with the side imaging pick up logs on the bottom with enough definition to tell it's a log ? I pull sinker cypress logs on the side and would really like to use a new unit mainly for that.
Second question, would someone with such.... Read More

SIDE SCANNING REQUIREMENTS
~ Captain Paul's response to: ~ Allison XR-01 ~

I could NOT fine any information on a Humminbird 1179, but I did have information on the Humminbird 1197. Could you have reversed the numbers when describing the model of the unit? If so, the 1197 Combo series comes in FOUR DIFFERENT varieties, which range in price from $2600 to $3000. One of the differences is the type of transducer and the use of dual transducers with the units. Another is the face that some come preloaded with Navionics marine charts. I mention this in order that you select the proper one for your type of work. The 1197c SI Combo NVB CHO features a 10.4' display, Side Imaging and DualBeam PLUS sonar with up to 8000 Watts PTP power output, GPS Chartplotting and advanced Fishing System capabilities. Includes unit cover and in-dash mounting kit. This model Includes select Navionics Charts pre-loaded. This product does not include a transducer.
It is billed as a fantastic Side Imaging~dual bean sonar with plenty of power.

Both manufacturers of the units you describe indicate a much improved view of structure and of the bottom contours than some of their older units, however remember that the High Definition Screen (HDS) designation usually means a better rendition of the SCREEN images. In order to get these better images you will almost certainly need a unit with the right type of transducers and one that has the capability to “punch through” the water to give you the results you need.

I suggest that you visit the respective manufacturer’s web site (www.lowrance.com & www.humminbird.com and view the specifications on both of the units you mentioned. You will not that some of the units REQUIRE a separate Structure Scan optional accessory in order to get the best results. This accessory would connect to a HDs unit via a cable to greatly improve the underwater images.

Both of these web sites have images and videos of their unit in action.

After narrowing down your choice, visit a stocking dealer and view the unit and speak to a competent technician about the capabilities of the unit.

Before spending that amount of money on a unit, I would be sure that it will perform as required for my type of application.

I would also call both of the companies to get their view on the type of unit that would meet your requirements. Try the Support sections at Lowrance @ 1-800-324-1356 and Humminbird @ 1-800-633-1468 for their suggestions.

A few years back, KVD was pushing a line of plastic worms that were streachy , in the ad he'd streach one 10-15 inches, and it would go back to it's original shape and size.

I have used them up north for smallies and largemouths, with great success.

Are those still made ? I don't remember the name of the lure or the company,,, but have not found them in Cabelas or BPS any.... Read More

STORY NUMBER ONE

Many years ago, Al Capone virtually owned Chicago . Capone wasn't famous for anything heroic. He was notorious for enmeshing the windy city in everything from bootlegged booze and prostitution to murder.
Capone had a lawyer nicknamed 'Easy Eddie.' He was Capone's lawyer for a good reason.. Eddie was very good! In fact, Eddie's skill at legal maneuvering kept Big Al out of.... Read More

Looks like I will be heading to Boudreaux on the 30th of this month.I have never been on that lake before. Can you get to Boudreaux from Lake Decade or Falgout Marina?

I'd be coming in from BR to Houma area. What would be the best/easiest place to launch from?

I have a friend coming along who has fished there many times, but not since Katrina.

I lived in New Mexico for a spell. Nice place. One of the places I lived at in Abq. New Mexico, Was 5 acre tract that was long and narrow. In the back I had a hay barn and horse stalls. Plenty chickens, ducks, etc...on an old apple/cherry orchard.

My house was up front on the property, and my adjacent neighbor's home was 1000 feet back in the rear of the property with his house approx. 20 feet.... Read More

Ever have a 'memorable' encounter with an Owl before? ?

Here's mine :

A few months ago, about midnight,a little Barred Owl swooped down, directly into my windshield of my truck, right under a street light like they normally do. I saw him coming and tried to stop, I was only going 25ish on a road to my place.....He whacked the top side of the front glass, then hit the ground in somones.... Read More

I thought this may be a humorous topic to get started, as for one,,, I have had more Embarrassing things happen to me over the years while in my boat, than I probably should admit....
