Guy's I'm looking for some advice. I'm considering adopting a young adult lab (2-3 years old) from a shelter as opposed to spending the big bucks for a new pup. I feel like shelter dogs deserve a chance for companionship and love as well. That being said, I also want to be able to have it trained to duck hunt. This does cause me some reservations. Is this to much of an undertaking/expectation.... Read More
Does anyone know if the Violet locks have been open lately? I'm planning a trip for Sunday (launching out of Bayou Bienvenue) and want to be able to make my way to Lake Borgne without a headache. I'd heard that the Bayou Bienvenue locks have been closed so I figured I'd take pencil canal down.
I'm looking to swap an inshore Tripletail Fishing Trip for a memorable mallard hunt. Fishing trip would take place this summer in Lake Borgne. We can also fish for redfish, flounder, and speckled trout if you have an interest in that as well, but I will guarantee to put a tripletail on your hook. I have all the necessary gear but you are also welcome to bring your own. Plan to come on down and.... Read More
Well now that the 2012-13 Duck Season has come to an end it's time to reflect on what a great season it has been. This year I'm glad to say that I hunted nothing but public land and had my best season to date since I've started keeping a log. I personally bagged 11 species and a total of 107 ducks this season. For me it was limits or near limits every hunt up until we had all the rain in early.... Read More
Had a good friend and first time Louisiana inshore fisherman on board with me this morning. Launched out of Bayou Bienvenue this morning and hit a few reefs on the south end of Lake Borgne. Ended the day with 40 specks, one spanish mackerel, and one 28' redfish. Second spot was pay dirt and had trout going airborne chasing shrimp. Couldn't have asked for a better day.
Ok guys it hurts my pride to admit this, but I'm having a problem with my 1989 4 cylinder 2 cycle 88 Special Evinrude. Was out boating over the weekend and hit something. Had a slight crack at the forward tip of the gearcase cone that was leaking a small amount of oil. I was able to fix it with JB Weld and it seems to be fixed (for now). But I have also discovered that I have oil leaking around.... Read More
Well saw Jimmy had some luck in the cypress swamp yesterday and I just couldn't help myself. Made a quick hunt before work this morning in some cypress swamp and came out with 3. Really wasn't expecting much as it was hot, muggy and no wind. Had to call it quits around 7:20am when the heavy fog rolled in.
Well it's official. Made my first attempt at fishing for tripletail this morning and came away with two nice beauties. Tried fishing the east side of Lake Borgne for trout but it was to no avail as there were gafftop everywhere. Figured what the heck I'll give the tripletail thing a shot. WHAT A RUSH!!! After boating that first fish my hands were shaking uncontrollably from the adrenaline. I'll.... Read More
Wanted to try a change of scenery so me and a friend fished the South end of Lake Borgne today. First stop was a reef that I usually catch trout on during transition periods. No takers. Decided to try new shoreline protection rocks near the castle. Didn't find any one stop shops but we picked up two or three fish at each cut. All were caught on either live shrimp or plastics 2 foot under a.... Read More
Well it was a hard pill to swallow after this mornings hunt. All in all I had a great season though. I wasn't able to make as many hunts as I did last year since I was limited to the weekends, but somehow I managed to kill more ducks. I really can't be disappointed with that. Got to make some great memories this year hunting in new places and I look forward to the ones I'll make next season. I'd.... Read More
Hunted my usual spot and was treated to a limit of 4 greenwings and 2 greys. It rained ducks fast and hard and I was done by 7:30am. What a great season it's been.
Just thought I'd give a heads up to anyone thinking about hunting Big Branch in the morning. Just got done making my daily jog on the lakefront in Lakeview and saw several groups of high flying birds, about 50-75 per group, riding the south wind coming from south of New Orleans and heading across the lake to the northshore. I got a feeling there's going to be good hunting in the Big Branch area.... Read More
Finally have some free time to post about my solo hunt on Sunday. Got another limit but it took awhile with fog as thick as I've ever seen. Still managed to pull off a limit by 9:30am. Should've been done an hour earlier but some of the shells I was shooting must've been missing their steel shot. Came out with 2 mallards, 3 greenwings and 1 spoony.
Had an awesome solo fising trip Sunday morning to the Rigolets. Caught 22 trout in Lake Catherine, then when the bite slowed made a move to some Rigolets shorelines to pick up 3 flounder. Gotta love fishing in October.
Today wasn't as fast and furious as Saturday, but I still managed to put together a limit by 7:30am. Two blue wings and two green wings. Didn't see as many birds, I think the hard south wind yesterday may have pushed the birds back up north a little ways. Hope everyone had a great hunt.
Harvest Breakdown to Date:
4 Blue wings
4 Green wings
Had a great hunt this morning. Tons of teal coming in. Literally had my limit in 5 minutes. Shot six times and killed 4 birds, 2 bluewings and 2 greenwings. Not as rusty as I thought I would be. Hope everyone had a great hunt this morning. Lets hear how ya did!
Made a fishing trip Wednesday and covered everywhere I could think of in the Rigolets and Lake Borgne looking for good water. None to be found. Only caught one speck. Planning to give Hopedale/Shell Beach a try for the first time but I was hoping to get some advice on good areas to fish this time of year and good places to get live shrimp. Comments and email are welcome. Any advice is much.... Read More
With the river water worries in Lake Ponchartrain this report should give local fisherman some comfort. Made an early run to the trestles this morning to find gusty winds too much for me to tolerate. After 30 minutes decided to head to Lake Borgne and fish the rigs on the west side of Lake Borgne near the mouth of Rigolets Pass. Could not have made a better choice as nearly every cast resulted.... Read More
