MAPPING FOR A LOWRANCE HDS-5
Most of the HDS series are loaded with a standard BaseMap. This base map is what the name implies, a basic map of the entire U.S.
To refine your unit if so equipped, you may have to purchase one of the compatible mapping programs that is designed for your particular unit. The HDS-5 series have four different units, some are preloaded with premium mapping and some are not.
Check the specifications on your unit and what mapping program is installed in the system. If your unit only has the “BaseMap” program, then you will have to supplement it by purchasing one of the Lowrance accessory mapping programs.
Several are available from NAVIONICS and Lowrance offers a supplemental mapping program that is quite impressive. Their INSIGHT HD can be seen on their web site at
http://www.lowrance.com/Products/Mapping/Insight-HD/
It can be used in newer Lowrance HDS series GPS units. Check it out to see if it covers the area in which you will be doing most of your travels. I suggest that you first consider their Nautic Insight HD East. It covers Inshore/offshore from Maine, around Florida, and Gulf Coast to all of Texas with Fishing Hot Spots marked fishing areas and select Bahamas region charting. It even has tides for a variety of coastal locations and numerous other features. It is available from a variety of sources for a MSRP Price of $ 299.00.
As for the Navionics programs, I believe that the Navionics Platinum program offers the best rendition of the area for your Lowrance HDS-5.
But you have to be sure that your model of the HDS-5 can accommodate the Navionics Platinum mapping.
If you have the INSIGHT loaded in you unit, be sure that your unit is programmed properly. Check it via the MENU feature, to show the MOST details on the mapping screens. If it not set so, do so and again review the map screens.
If your unit is set to depict the MOST details in the mapping screen, then you will have to look at other mapping programs.
I suggest that you call LOWRANCE SUPPORT at 1-800- 324-1356 and see if they can recommend another mapping system for the Cocodrie area that shows greater details in the displayed features.
Before laying out several Benjamins ($100) for a system that does not give you what you really need for the Cocodrie area, visit a stocking Lowrance dealer and view the INSIGHT and the various Navionics products that can be used in your units. Pick out your fishing area and zoom in to see if there is enough details to accommodate you navigation needs.
