Lowrance has top flight equipment. I am sure that either unit will more than live up to its specifications. Either unit is an excellent choice.
Aside from the fact that the LCX-27C is a 7 inch sonar/GPS combo and the LMS-525-C DF has a 5 inch display, there is very little difference between the two units.
I suggest that you go to the Lowrance web site and compare the two units side my side.
Enter
http://www.lowrance.com/ProductComparison/product_comparison.asp?compare1=lcx27c&parentPage=Marine&numCompare=1 and select the two units.
This feature will allow you to compare each feature of one unit to the same feature of the other.
The LCX 27 also has the ability to reach sonar depths to 3000 feet, but I don’t know if you really need that feature where as the LMS 525 has a max depth capacity of 2500 feet. Both units are shown with an EXTERNAL ANTENNA, but I believe they can also be purchased with an internal antenna. And both units can accommodate Lowrance’s new USA TOPO Series 7 mapping software. This software is the latest and is quite impressive.
As for the antenna, my hand held unit works fine on the console of my bay boat without an external antenna, and I suspect that your unit will work there also. But before you buy it, borrow a hand held unit and place it on the console where you will mount the fixed unit and see if it performs up to specifications. If so then there should not be a problem with mounting the fixed mounted unit at that location.
It comes down to your choice weather or not you want the larger screen and the deeper water sonar features at the price increase.
Remember that the supplemental mapping software will cost about $120.00 plus. Figure the cost of the TOPO mapping in your budget. It is worth it.
