Nightmares After checking the game cameras this weekend, I have a new respect when walking to my stands in the dark. Last week was my first encounter with a black bear in the wild and this week it’s a huge alligator and adult male bear that are visiting my stand frequently. It was amazing to see an alligator in the middle of the woods with water a ¼ of a mile away from my stand location. My son....  Read More

Saturday morning I and my son Nick, age 12 was small game hunting and scouting in Richard Yancy WMA. We have been hunting this area about 10 years, that morning we walked in the woods about a ¼ mile slipping quietly and walking slow. We came to a log and decided to sit and take a break, as I was taking a sip of water my son said quietly, look, a hogs coming! No it’s a black bear. My jaw dropped....  Read More

I am looking to do some hunting this year on some public land. My buddy is coming in on leave and is bringing his bow. We are looking to head out in to the woods and either go after a hog or deer. We are in the New Orleans area but wouldn\\\'t mind driving a few hours as long as we can pitch a tent somewhere. Is there anything that we should know, or anywhere we would have decent....  Read More

Is it any wonder, after reviewing the facts regarding the fees Louisiana charges compared to Mississippi, why Mississippi is the leader of the two states in so many Wildlife Management Areas?

From first hand experiences, Louisiana WMA’s, like the PRWMA (Pearl River Wildlife Management Area), have always struggled through low budgets, and Rangers claim they can’t afford to put rocks on....  Read More

Went this weekend and put in some scouting to locate the deer honey holes. As usual for this time of year, we did see some deer sign and it looks like another promising year. You would swear the deer numbers are low but the camera don’t lie, all deer are taken on week days not weekends, the deer know what day Friday is. Just remember keep your camera high in dry are you will surely donate it.....  Read More

I was thinking about taking a trip to Richard K. Yancey and let the hounds tree a few coons. I was looking for some information on the woods, is it big hardwood timber? Swampy? Thick underbrush? Also, I noticed that on the northern part of the wma, which is where I was planning to go, it looked like there are agricultural fields on the boundary. If I am correct, does anybody know what is planted....  Read More

Hi all,

I'm new to the site, as well as to hunting in general. I have a few questions that I can't really find a straight answer on.

Me and a buddy want to try some deer hunting in Sherburne WMA this coming fall, but I've got a few questions. Hang with me here because I'm new to deer hunting. My buddy has been deer hunting plenty, just not in Louisiana. He's from....  Read More

I have heard thru the grapevind that LDWF is considering increasing the size of the restricted areas on coastal WMA's know as Limited Access Areas?

As I read the rule it restricts combustion engines from being allowed within the LAA areas 24/7 from September thru the end of January.

Does anyone know if this is accurate in terms of how the rules are enforced?

How do you....  Read More

We (hunter and conservationist of the WMA’s) don’t have access to, or the privilege of, having feature articles written for us in the Louisiana Sportsman, which is controlled by Ann Taylor (a Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries Commissioner), on our behalf as does the LDWF. The only way we can possible hope to have our side of any debate with LDWF accurately portrayed is to reach out to you, the....  Read More

All of us with the Save Our WMA would like to publicly thank the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, specifically Kenny Ribbeck, for listening our recent suggestions to open Oil Well Road, which is a road within the Pearl River Wildlife Management Area that has been closed in the off hunting seasons for the past 12 years for “Turkey Management”.

When we pointed out that in....  Read More

Since we all know that “everything on the internet is true”, just like the “French model”, I won’t try to debunk all the stuff LDWF puts in the hog trough for public consumption, but I’ll do my best to provide the LDWF an opportunity to present facts and data to support their positions in an attempt to dispel some of the urban legends that are circulated at the agency’s campfires.

But....  Read More
