THANKS FOR BEING ONE OF THE LOUISIANA SPORTSMAN LOYAL READERS.
Sorry to hear about your Garmin 192C no longer working. When first introduced, it was an impressive unit. However, when you get into your selection process, you will be amazed at the advancements that newer GPS units now have.
As you stated the 192C can accept supplemental map program downloads. As you stated, the Garmin MapSource U.S. TOPO is generally the first choice for those who venture into the coastal Louisiana marshes AND who need mapping images for inland lakes and rivers, etc. The U.S. TOPO (2008) and the newer TOPO U.S. 100K and their more detailed TOPO U.S. 24K mapping software.
The TOPO U.S.24K is sold by regions, but the other 100k version includes topo type maps for the entire U.S.
As a replacement, I suggest that you consider another user friendly Garmin unit as it will save you hours of relearning the instruction nomenclature.
Either the GPSMAP 431 or 521 series of units should supply you with a reasonably priced GPS unit with most of the “Whistles and Bells” that most users want.
Unfortunately, these units cannot accept your older US TOPO mapping software, so you will have to include the price of one of the newer mapping programs to get the most out of whatever unit you finally decide to purchase.
The GPSMAP 431 comes ready to go with preloaded U.S. Inland Lake map data. This option when used with a supplemental mapping program such as the BlueChart® g2 or the BlueChart® g2 Vision® will give you the inland and coastal coverage that you need.
Other units come preloaded with a variety of different mapping programs that may also suit your needs.
Check these suggestions out on the Garmin web site at
www.garmin.com and or call the Garmin Support Section a 1-800-800-1020 and narrow down your selection considering price and features THEN visit a stocking Garmin dealer to get a “hands on” feeling about your selection.
There are other Garmin fixed mounted units that will also suit you needs, but these will generally fall into a more expensive option bracket.
By the way, I prefer to have the Garmin DVD version of the mapping programs when ever possible and not a download as a means of obtaining the software.
Narrow down your choice(s) and get back with me and I will be happy to discuss your options.
