Hunting season changes in the wind

There are significant deer-hunting season changes being proposed today during the Louisiana Wildlife & Fisheries Commission meeting. It will take some time to put together the story with all the details, but there are new hunting zones and a move back to designated either-sex days in some areas of the state.

So stay tuned, and be watching for the story on the front page.

Wow
I wonder how did the LDWF come up with their decisions . People complaining , or actual deer study ? Hope they left area 6 out of it .

Doe Days
The move to designated either sex days has needed to come back for a while now. Being able to kill does all season long has put a hurt on the area population down in area 6. This could bring some stability to the herd.

Are you serious?? I hunt strictly area 6, and its straight swamp evrywhere, and I made at leaset 75 hunts this year, some private land and some public, and of all those hunts there were less than 5 that i can recall not seeing at least 1 deer. and when I do see deer its usually 5 or more does, what I dont see much of is bucks!!!! if anything you should be able to kill does all season long espically on maurepas swamp wma, and limit the number of days to kill bucks! they are the ones that are scarce.

Area 2
Leave area 2 alone. I don't want to see the little nubbers being shot again for doe meat. The way it is now you can pick & take out the old does. People in area 6 might be a little trigger happy. But hey, I've always liked choice. I now kill fewer deer than when there was either sex days. Thats just me.

Area 6 trigger happy ?
Because we , in area 6 want to keep the rules the same makes us trigger happy ? You want to keep your 3 does per year , does that make you trigger happy ? Most of the complaints I've heard over the season was area 2 crying about not seeing deer .

I agree 100% swamphuntin ... My lil boy killed one doe this year but we had plenty chances to fill our tags but chose not to . We only killed 2 bucks and 1 doe between the two of us , I really don't think we hurt the deer population . And can't really see where Isaac hurt the population either . We've seen more deer and sign this year than the last few years combined .

Area 6
I hunt the swamp too. It's always been. The area I hunt used to be a big dog hunting area until last season. I mean big. Nothing wrong with dogs, it's just not ideal for deer numbers. Everyone loves hunting and shooting deer. My area needs some rebound time and when there were doe days, we saw more deer. Plain and simple. Lets not get too fired up.

Area 6
Not to mention the amount of button bucks or young bucks ground checked at dark for does. Come on guys. I know we see eye to eye on that.

Looks like the single shot crack barrel with a hammer is going to be legal.

I heard 6 point or better in more areas unless you are 16 years old and under. :) Just wishing.

I hope
Debate the particulars but I think the number of zones should be reduced. There is no good reason to break the state up into dozen different zones.

Changes
Have any of you read the proposed changes on Wild life and fisheries web site? The changes are for ONLY a few areas, which is bull in my opinion. Make the rules apply state wide if they want either sex days again. It seems to me that everytime they change the rules those of us hunting in the southern part of the state get the shaft.
I hunt in area 1 and out of 28 members in the club one Doe was killed this past season, I have 60 to 70 pictures a night on my trail cam, 90% of them Does.
I am guessing the state is doing what they do best and changing the rules to make a group of their friends happy, they want to blame poor deer reporting on the change, which they are either saying we are outlaws or to dumb to report our kills. Did wild life and fisheries look at this year as being a bad season? I have heard from people all over the area and they say the samething, it has been a bad season. the deer stayed on their night time patterns, there was no real cold weather and all kinds of other factors that made an off season.

Hunting Zone
Privet land I feel is managed well enough and can maintain there own heard. The real problem is all these doe day zones opening at different times, it brings people from other zone that aren't open yet and put more hunters in the woods in that area and putting a higher kill rate on deer in that area. To really fix the problem you need to open all these zones at the same time, that will keep hunters from doing a mass killing in one area and than moving on to the next. It seems as if the people making all these rules has never picked up a gun and hunted, I know this about the zones, before I got my hunting land we did just that very thing jumping from zone to zone as Doe days open, and I know of large groups of hunters that still do that very thing.

Can't wait for the results
I'm looking forward to hearing about the changes. Hopefully more deer survive in the future with some good management. The states with good management have more older bucks and a higher deer population. Ill sacrifice some meat and hunting days to see more deer while hunting for a change. No solution will be correct for everyone, but as long as they are trying to get a better deer herd it is better than doing nothing imo.
