Heading to Lake Verret this weekend. Does anyone know if the sac-a-lait are hitting? Also... looking for a good bait shop in the Gonzales area. Anybody know of one?
That place JB is referring to is Speedy Junction.
High and muddy! Maybe the catfish are biting?? Anyone know! Where are you launching from? Gator Corner probably has shiners.
poppincork - Yes, it is Speedy Junction.
As for as catfish, I fished there last Sunday and had 1 bite on rod and reel. We threw 3 jugs out just for kicks and caught 3 on the jugs. Caught those 3 within 5 minutes of each other and never had another bite.
Fish must be out away from the trees if you caught on jugs and not rod/reel. I assume you were fishing by the trees? What did you use for bait? Thanks.Tom
poppincork - actually, the fish caught on jugs were caught in the trees. I don't know what the problem was. I understand it could be a little early but I have never had a trip out there before without catching at least a few small catfish and I grew up with a camp out there for 20+ years.
Last year we would make a trip and catch mostly catfish and few bream. Next trip, a week or two later, mostly bream and few cats in the same place; go figure that!
poppincork - When we go after catfish, we put in at Attakapas also. Usually this early in the year its the only protected area of the lake with the wind usually out of the east. Sunday the wind had switched and was blowing out of the north - northwest
Water is high and muddy in and around Verret.
The best bait shops in the Gonzales area are Fisherman's One Stop on HWY 22 and the gas station right on HWY 22 right by the interstate.
