cast netting for shrimp

Does anyone have some good tips on cast netting for shrimp in the Lake Pontchartrain area? I usually fish Slidell, Lake Catherine, and the Rigolets. I'm thinking of trying my hand at cast netting for my own shrimp to use as live bait. I hear people use rabbit pellets or dog food as bait - how?? Where would be the best places to try casting for shrimp in the areas that I'm fishing? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
