After last Friday's major cold front with a spectacular hunt with new birds and a quick limit I thought yesterday's front with identical conditions to last week's hunt would have produced similar results, but there were no new birds down and hardly anything flying. Last Saturday and Sunday were very slow too with the extreme low water and calm winds. Yesterday the water fell out like someone pulled the drain in the bath tub. We shot 6 in our first location hunting from 7am to 9:15 am then had to pick up the dekes and move b/c of the water falling out and the dekes laying on their sides. We picked up and moved to another spot in deeper water where we hunted from 11am to 1:30pm to bag 7 more. We shot these 7 from 11am to 12pm, then from 12pm to 1:30pm we never fired our guns. My observations are we have no to very little feed growing in the mud flats. Not a stich of green anywhere. If new birds come down with these fronts they are not sticking around. From here on out we will be dealing with mostly low water hunts and the hunting will only get tougher and tougher. It's not a matter of the ducks not liking my set up, my calling, or flaring off of the blind. It's a matter of the few ducks we have are simply not flying unless spooked and forced to get up. We still had a great time yesterday as my boys got to hang out with my nephew. My 7 year old son broke in his new 20 gauge pump he got for Christmas. We ended up with 13 ducks (10 grays, 2 gw teal and 1 goldeneye). Despite the tough conditions, I will still be out there until the end. Taking a break today.
