When all odds are stacked against you....go fishing!
After a rough handful of days at work, I had to scratch my itch. Yes, Phillip and I are crazy to be fishing hours after a cold front in ice cold temperatures with strong winds but who cares, we limited out! Met up with Phil at BAIT INC. around 6:30 and hung around the bait shop for awhile chit chattin with Mr. Jimmy and then headed out to where we have been catching our fish lately. After 2 hours with 7 trout to show for it, I felt the need to rethink our game plan. Where did I go last year around this time of the year when I was striking out? Then it hit me! The dike canal area around the Violet locks.
Wasn't too sure how it would be this year with the re-opening of the locks and seabrook but what the hell did we have to lose? I caught fish in that area last December so why wouldn't they be there this December? Well honestly, there are a bunch of reasons why they wouldn't be there this December but I had to find out. Started chunkin live shrimp in 10-15 feet of water carolina rigged and within a couple minutes I was smiling from ear to ear. Trout after trout after trout on Matrix Shads, TKO's and Live shrimp carolina rigged. Number 50 hit the ice chest along with a 2 sheepshead, a hybrid bass, and a lone redfish.
On the way back in I wanted to try another one of my spots to see what was going on and once again fount the trout stacked up and hungry. Every day is different, but I think we both know where we will be starting out tomorrow morning.
I hear anglers say all the time that fish shut down right after a cold front but I have totally different experience and many times find the fish bite better right after a cold front(especially in Bayou Bienvenue). Like my good friend Holy Mackerel says 'The fish gotta eat no matter what.'
Also, for all of you Bayou Bienvenue anglers, BAIT INC. will be carrying MATRIX SHADS within the next couple days. They work GREAT in the area both tight lined and carolina rigged. Tell Jimmy I sent you and he will take care of you.
