Waterfowl and Duck Hunting in Lake Pontchartrain / Northshore in Southeast Louisiana

Pearl River WMA

What happen to common sense. If you set up less than 100 yards-ITS TO CLOSE. IF your shots are spraying the next hunter-ITS TO CLOSE. If you dog is retrieving your ducks and I can hear clean as day saying good boy over and over- ITS TO CLOSE. I show up at 4:00am to get my blind, set up and hope the ducks are still around, and then the dumass shows up and ruins your chance to have a decent hunt-THANKS DUMASS. You should not be any closer than 200yards if not farther

Also at Pearl River today.

We also had people pile in around us this morning and steady cutting us off from the birds. Little un sportsman like especially when you drive from Baton Rouge!

Longer boat ride = less dummies

Most people that hunt PR launch at the main launch on HWY90 and take that 5 minute boat ride to the spots that EVERYONE hunt. The key is to go further down river to get away from the dummies. There are limits waiting with no competition close to the gulf.

don't hunt there

The last place I would hunt is Pearl River WMA. I would rather not hunt then go there. It's too easy to get to and everyone hunts there. It's stupid the amount of people the let in there. They should make it a lottery like South Farm is. Someday there will be a fight and someone will get shot. What a crap hole that place has become.

You would think....

It sure would be nice if the LDWF came up with some basic ground and courtesy rules on duck hunting WMAs such as no hunter shall set up any less than 150 or 200 yards away from another hunter. I agree, 100 yards is too close, but hey it's public land.

Ha!!! 'sure would be nice if the wardens would regulate this problem'! Be careful what ya wish for!!! You think another hunter 100 yards away is messing ya up, wait till mr. enforcer graces you with his ever so courteous presence! More laws and regulations are not the answer! If they are really within earshot as you have claimed, then simply and politely ask them if they would mind moving a little further away. If they refuse then then insist they move. Most of us are not looking for confrontation and will most likely move further away if asked politely. But, lets not forget, it is public land so you should go into the situation expecting to run across or have other hunters or fisherman reasonably near you. On the other hand, I appreciate we can blog our frustrations on this site sort of as a 'wake up notice' to the guilty parties that set up 'on top' of other hunters as to let them know the effects of their actions.

WMA Hunting

Unfortunately, I think you might have to get used to it. I gave up migratory duck hunting the PR WMA over 10 years ago. Nothing but problems, and from what I hear it has gotten much worse since Katrina. I only hunt wood ducks now, and only in swamps or small bayous where I can get away from 'Those People'. Deer hunting is no better. You have to travel way up river, and go way into the woods to get away from other people. There are miles and miles of river, but it never fails. At least once a year somebody will pull his boat up right next to mine and walk in just as the sun is rising or setting. You just can't fix stupid.
