The biggest thing with a hand me down bow is the fit. Make sure that your draw length is correct. I am a 27' draw and there is no way I could shoot a 30' bow. As far as 'will it get the job done?'. With a little practice, a good sharp broadhead, and good shot placement, that bow will absolutely kill anything you encounter. Good luck and have fun!
If yours has the same cams as mine you can adjust the draw length, but not much. If you have a local archery shop or even a good sporting goods shop they can help. Couldn't hurt to have someone inspect it and tune it for you. They can check the string for fraying, set the draw weight and paper tune it. If you change your draw length you may want to look at your arrow length as well. That bow will be a killing machine if it's set up right. Good luck.
I dont know if you plan to shoot off the string or use a D-Loop(most people use a loop) but the loop also adds another 1/2' of draw length... 1 1/2' is alot to adjust from 29' to 30.5'. You may get a little string slap on your bow arm so I would suggest an arm guard. Once you get it tuned up and do a little practicing you'll probably be fine with it.
I bought that same bow back in 1995 and killed my first deer with it that season. I still hunt with it today, can't decide if it's because it has sentimental value or I just can't justify buying a new one. I find it's not as fast or has as much let off as the new bows out today, but it's quiet. I've probably killed a half dozen deer and a hog with it, great bow for hunting, my .02!!
