I repainted my boat after Katrina , it was done with a DA sander on the outside , anything that is loose, flakey or chipped was sanded down to aluminum , anything that looked good the paint was left on and just roughed up , it is important to feather in the spots you take it down so the paint will blend and not leave ridges , use zinc chromate primer on spots that are bare metal or the paint isn't going to stick , but you don't have to use it on areas that still have ppaint , the paint was $100 a gallon and I got it from Custom Falts in Toca , they go by B+B Welding now days , they mixed it for me , it had an additive in it that is called something like Zeon which reduces chipping and flaking , and some other stuff , it really worked good , the outside the boat is perfect and not one spot is flaking off , the inside the boat I skimped on prep and you can tell as it is starting to flake off from pressure washing ---prep work is very important
I did this once to my old bow fishing boat. I will tell you this, prep prep prep prep prep prep and do not rush it. Good stripping of paint, prime job, and thorough wash before starting the painting process is key. Any imperfection will show. The prep work is the most important part. I used a type of 'Airplane Strip' (industrial strength) to remove the existing paint. this stuff works like a charm. You literally paint it on the boat (buy plenty of paint brushes because it eats the brushes) and after 15 minutes, pressure wash it off. WEAR GLOVES this stuff is potent, and i made a mistake of not wearing a mask and ended up seeing spots and had a massive headache. As far as as the primer and painting process, i cant help you much on that. I used a cheap spray paint primer and painted my bowfishing boat flat black with camo designs. All done with spray paint. I looked into the marine paint and primer and i can tell you that it is not cheap. Last thing, dont be stingy with the prime, it will help alot in scratched areas.
I have a Collision Ctr. I painted a few alm. boat and one was my own. The first ting u did wrong was not to have Alm. brite your boat, Then u should of used a Alm. primer call 615and 616 from Dupond paint r you can get that from a ship yard. having said that now you will have to sand as much paint as you can, with a da #240 paper .Then wipe it with a good prep soil then use a tag rag to remove dirt. Then buy a aut-motor paint call clear cost and don't for get to used the Alm. primer that u can buy at a aut. motor paint store,My boat was 30 year old win i sold it the paint was like the day i painted it. Good Luck with your boat.
dont know just google it!!! dealer wont tell you!!
