Works well
Like I said it works great unless you are throwing into windy conditions. The wind seems to catch the light line and make it do all kinds of crazy things. On spinners, you ll get those wind knots, on baitcasters, more chance of a backlash. Allows you to put more line on since its thinner. Also with braid I dont have to worry about lines breaking, If I hook onto a red, I just lock the drag down and drag him to the boat.
I use powerpro on all my spinning reels and tie a mono or fluorocarbon leader so i can break it off if I need to, because that stuff is ridiculously strong. There is no stretch, so it takes a bit to get used to (you feel everything), and switching back to mono after using it feels weird. As far as using on baitcasters, I don't put it on mine just because I'm not that proficient with it yet and I can't imagine trying to get a birds nest out with braid. Otherwise, I can't see why it wouldn't be good for a baitcaster.
When I spool up the braid, I wrap the empty spool with a layer of electrical tape to prevent the braid from slipping and spinning on the spool.
Jls I have never used braid but I took my lil nephew fishing a while back and he had braid on a spin cast . He got hung up on something under the water ... He pulled the boat with his pole to the snag , and we end up having to cut the line with a knife after wrestling trying to break it off ! Usually with mono you can just break it off fairly easy , I wasn't used to dealing with that strong of line and was amazed at how strong it actually was .
I have lost some huge trout on mono that I thought the reason was my drag was too tight and the hook just pulled through their paper mouths . So , if I were going after big trout I would definitely fish with a loose drag instead of trying to horse them in with braided line .
I've been using braid on baitcasters for 20 years. I will never go back to mono (except for that period in college where I couldn't afford braid!).
As others have said, you get the following benefits from braid:
1. better feel (jls--you might even catch more fish)
2. stronger line
3. longer casts
The only negative I could suggest is that if you backlash badly, you might want to throw your rod overboard.
...nobody uses a arbor anymore ???...all you need on the 'inside' is maybe 40yrds (120ft) of line considering the average cast is 30 to 40 ft...(leaves 80ft to play with)...also a new 100 yrd spool will go a long ways...the same goes w/some overkill calibers w/hunting ???...cheers
Been using it for years. 12lb dia 50 lb test on my spinning reels. Not a baitcaster fan. If you get snagged its easy to break off if you know how. Just point your rod at the snag hold the spool so it doesnt give out line give a little slack then yank hard and the line snaps at the knot every time. Sounds like a .22 rifle being shot. lol
Rarely is saltwater gin clear. So using braid to me is the way to go. Once you have your jig tied on you can fish for weeks without retying. It takes a tremendous amount of abuse. And cost wise I just respooled a reel that the braid was at least 8 years old. And only because it was down to half a spool from tying different lures. Takes a foot here takes a foot there. How long can you go without respooling mono? not very long because it goes bad quickly.
There is so many things that go in to fishing with all kinds of line. One is distance and weight of the lures you use. Next casting into or with the wind. I use power pro on my spinning reels and on casting compo when I fish heavy cover and grass. I hate the way power pro digs into my spool and you get that sudden stop not a back lash. Fishing a popping cork into the wind is a pain as the power pro rolls over the tip and boy that is a pain. For my money there is no better line for a spinning compo then power pro as there is no memory to tangle your line. PS The heavier the lure the less problem you will have take that to the bank. I like mono on casting rod for feel and I hate that one the line digs into the spoll.
JLS,I guess i am old school but i use 10lb mono on all my spinning gear.I have fished with poles with braid and i can't stand it.When you do get all tangled up it is a disaster to undo. When someone gets tangled up with your line it is a bigger disaster.I do not like the 'feel' of braid.I prefer the stretch(give) that mono has for speckle trout fishing.i have seen people fishing with braid loose more trout by ripping there lips. The mono has more of shock resistance to it for trout fishing for me.I will never use it.
Braid is good for redfishing in the grass though,it cuts through the grass verus mono grabs all the grass on it.
You have to be careful with braid when you get hung up on something,if you just grab it like mono, use could easily cut your hand with it,it feels like cable in your hands.
I will stick with mono for my fishing.
Thanks for input guys I have several rod&reel set up to use not a one man rod&reeler, What i may w/ w/all the pros&cons of both is have both type on diff reels, I never had alot problem w/backlashing I use to use Stren clear blue flo 12-17 lbs great string, but i'm like alot of you trying to sae a Penny theses days&seen some Zebco OMNIFLEX Mono $4 for 250 yrd roll it has alot memory , Like i said ihave 2 more Shakespeare alpha ALPHA comin&i have 3 spin cast 2 of which i just rspooled w/ ONIFLEX 15 lbs, My other i have stren on have had for awhile w/o any complaints. So maybe like said use both,
I love it Admiral.
As far as the line digging in when you catch a big fish braid is no worse than mono. If your using cheapo reels that doesnt overlap the line like it should then you will always have a digging in problem. I dont care if your using 30# test mono.
Ripping the lips off is a lot of bull too. If your an experienced fisherman you would know to use a rod with a fast tip. With a decent quality mid-priced rod you can still get the feel you want fishing bottom or spinners or swim/jerk baits.
Some people will never like braid. Thats fine but when I have a good knot of freckled trout biting every cast and a stoopid redfish decides to join in I want that line to get that red in as quickly as possible so he wont go running all over and scare off the trout. When you break them off with mono they still go nuts right there trying to spit that hook out. Game over and time to go look for more trout.
Is there a question in here? Braid works great for any reel, just not in windy conditions.
