ONLY the under 16 year old youth can shoot. Some have said that the supervising person can't even handle the loaded gun. I take exception to that. I think that the supervisor could handle the loaded gun acting as an educator of proper gun safety etc. But only the youth can shoot...and that's for sure!!!
Dad
3 man youth limit 2011 season
If you get caught it is a trip to federal court. It is not fun and it is very costly. This was copied directly from the WLF website. I take my son and a friend of his when I go. All I do now is sit back and watch. If you have taught him well he will be able to do the whole thing with you there just for safety and support. I let my son do everything on this day including setting up the decoys, brushing the blind, calling the ducks and determining when to shoot. There is nothing better than watching them grow and love the sport as much as you do. I have made this hunt with my son every year since he was 10. He is now 15 and making his last youth hunt. He now does it all and has made me very proud.
DUCKS AND COOTS
YOUTH WATERFOWL HUNTING DAYS: Waterfowl hunters age 15 and younger, when accompanied by an adult (age 18 and older), may take ducks, geese, mergansers, coots and gallinules on these days. Bag limits are the same as regular duck season. The adult may not hunt ducks on these days.
When I responded to jacomo below, I was refering to the federal 'Youth Waterfowl Days'. Those are the days set for youth ages 15 and younger which are OUTSIDE of the regular 60-day duck season. Because those days are OUTSIDE the 60-day djuck season, the USFWS has complete control over the regulations.
1) the age limit is 15 and younger
2) the adult can NOT shoot ducks
But there are LOTS of 'Youth Waterfowl Hunts' that are WITHIN the 60-day duck season. Youth hunts at Sherburne WMA, Lacassine NWR, and Mandalay NWR for example are held WITHIN the 60-day duck season and the rules are different.
At Sherburne WMA, the age limit is 17 and younger (instead of 15 and younger), but adult still can NOT shoot ducks.
At Lacassine NWR, the age limit is 17 and younger and the adults CAN shoot ducks.
So make sure you read the particulars of each 'Youth Waterfowl Hunt' that you apply for.
But regardless of where you hunt, if you are hunting the Youth Waterfowl Hunt Days that are set statewide OUTSIDE of the regular 60-day duck season ...... the adult can NOT shoot ducks.
Are you positive? I hear you can shoot. It seems like everyone 'heard' something different. I would like to know for sure. I shoot during these hunts but need to stop if illegal. Not worththeticket
