Geez ..... I hate when people talk to 'game wardens' and get inconsistent information.
First, you do whatever you are comfortable with, but my son has been drawn for a youth hunt at a NWR in southwest Louisiana and the regulations on the permit clearly say:
'Youth hunters are required to have an adult supervisor (21 years or older) and are permitted one guest, which must be another hunter-safety carded youth....'
So, I will have 2 youths under my supervision on Saturday, just like I have many times in the past while being checked by both state and federal agents on WMAs and NWRs.
As I said earlier, it is perfectly legal for an adult to supervise multiple youth hunters.
Secondly, there is no requirement for the supervising adult hunters to be hunter-safety certified or have a valid hunting license. We (the state of Louisiana) do not require people born before 1969 to take the Hunters Safety course to be able to buy a license and hunt. Only if the youth has NOT completed the Hunter-Safety course is it required for him to be accompanied by either 1) a person born after 1969 with a valid hunting license OR 2) an adult who HAS completed Hunters safety. If the youth has completed Hunters Safety, his accompanying adult must simply be an adult (Hunters safety and/or valid hunting license is NOT required).
You can read this for yourself at: http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/hunting/hunter-education
Or read the requirements for the adult 'escort' for the Youth Hunts at Sherburne WMA at: http://www.wlf.louisiana.gov/sites/default/files/pdf/lottery_hunt/35805-2012-13%20Lottery%20Application%20-%20Sherburne%20WMA%20Youth%20Waterfowl%20Hunt%20-%20North%20Farm/2012-13_lottery_application_-_sherburne_wma_youth_waterfowl_hunt_-_north_farm.pdf
Guys, to clarify, the age is 15 and under for this weekend and next weekend's extra youth hunt days which are outside of the regular 60-day waterfowl seasons, as set forth by the USFWS.
HOWEVER, the age is 17 and under for special youth-only hunts on certain WMA's and NWR's that occur during the regular season (after next weekend the 10th/11th). Similarly, the age is 17 and under for youth hunts on all other game in Louisiana like deer, squirrels, rabbits, etc. A little confusing to say the least, thanks to Mr. Reynolds for the clarification. Larry, please advise if any of the above is in error.
Good luck guys!
My comment was short which, made for a mis understanding.
Alright the warden said way more than that, I just cut it way short, the warden is my cousin father in law, which been a wardon for 25 plus years.
He said all the regulation and guidelines which are stated in your links and other post on here( that you posted) on the sportsman. Plus I already knew all the laws for which I read the handbook every year, from front to back. ( you know the links does not say anything about how many youths one adult can bring.)
But then he said there are a few changes depends on where you may be hunting( like your son lottery nwr adult has to be 21)
Where I will be hunting the adult can be 18 plus and must have safety certification/ valid lincense( he didn't have to say nothing about 1969 as I am not that old)
Youth must have a safety certification class, and it is one youth per one adult. Now that is where I am hunting.
But lreynolds all your post are good and 100% correct. Thanks for always posting. I see your name on every topic and all comments are good! Thanks again
You make an excellent point in continuation of Darren's post ..... and that is any particular area can have restrictions beyond those called for in state law (and of course, state law can be more restrictive, but not less, than federal law). Indeed, SW Louisiana NWR Complex requires adults accompanying youths to be 21, youths to be hunter-safety certified, and allows no more than 2 youths. None of those requirements exist under state law.
Since your post yesterday, I've done a quick search of youth hunting regulations in a number of states, and I've yet to find a limit on the number of youths 1 adult can supervise. LDWF actually has a definition of what 'supervise' actually means:
'Direct Supervision' means that a person being supervised shall be within normal audible voice proximity and in direct line of sight of the supervising adult at all times while hunting.'
Lastly, I meant no offense to any particular Enforcement agent. Those guys have responsibility for so many things that nuances in laws for a huge variety of fish and game species must drive them crazy. However, dozens of times during the year, I confront misinformation attributed to 'game wardens'. In this case, I didn't want to see a kid left at home because a responsible adult thought he could only supervise 1 youth.
I big thanks to you lreynolds, from me and the extra youth hunters we will bring( most never shot there first duck). Just want to keep it safe ad if we do get stopped by GW. We will have no problems. So thank you.
Btw I got back intouch with the game wardon and told him the information. He contacted the main office and once again you hit the nail on the head with your information. And your research was correct.
He will make sure he gives out the right information this time.
The adult can do everything except shoot ducks during the Youth Waterfowl weekend. In the West and Coastal Zones, the adult may not even carry a gun because no other waterfowl seasons are open. In the East Zone, the goose season is open concurrently with the Youth Waterfowl weekend, but adults may NOT shoot at ducks, and that includes stopping cripples.
Absolutely call, work the dog, and make it a great experience for them.
